    Son’s Kitchen #5 Flooring

The builder who sold the house did a lot of renovation and it was done in a hurry. Earlier in the year the kitchen was flooded when some of his pipework burst. I think you are right about the insufficient stagger and boards not abutting to each other properly. But that's liveable with if...

    Son’s Kitchen #5 Flooring

I can see from the exposed edges it's a black hard floor, and it's easy to discern from the seasickness you get when you walk front to back that it has not been laid down properly. The tongue and groove boards are about 10mm thick and I fear they are hiding an unevenness too severe for vinyl...

Son’s Kitchen #3 Dishwasher part 2: cold water feed

Thanks again gsf600y. Your pipework is impressive! Like you I am a (retired) IT person, but unlike you I regard water as the most terrifying substance known to man and the idea of cutting and manipulating pipes fills me with dread, even if it involves something as friendly-sounding as 'pushfit'...

    Son’s Kitchen #5 Flooring

foxhole, it does indeed look a mess, but replace it with what? See post for pitfalls of taking it up.

Thanks foxhole. You say 'build' but googling 'mdf shelf units' shows a lot of ready made things on the market, hopefully only requiring assembly. All the ones I have looked at are either one foot or two feet depth, so I'll see if I can find something that uses the available 18 inches depth.

Son’s Kitchen #3 Dishwasher part 2: cold water feed

Thanks gsf600y. You are talking to a non plumber so it's going to be option 2 :)

Son’s Kitchen #2 Dishwasher part 1: altering units

Thanks Mottie. I should have mentioned that the dishwasher (Indesit DFP 27B1) is freestanding, so even the horizontal base panel will need to come out (or maybe it can stand in front of the Indesit as an unfixed panel). But I'll see what can be done with the bracing options you mention. You've...

    Son’s Kitchen #1 Boiler enclosure

Thanks Alkato and Harry. I'll ask Mark what the boiler make and model is.

    Son’s Kitchen #6 Cupboard Shelving

This concludes the Son’s Kitchen series. My son wanted me to put shelves up in here but the metal detector reveals an awful lot of metal behind the plaster so I don’t feel like fixing individual shelves. I am looking for something freestanding. The space available is depth 18 inches, width...

    Son’s Kitchen #5 Flooring

The solid kitchen floor has been covered with tongue and groove boards, but these have not been abutted up to the units, leaving large gaps with plastic underlay sticking out. My son’s idea is to take up the boards and replace with vinyl or similar. There is a problem with this you can’t see on...

Son’s Kitchen #4 Dishwasher part 3: waste pipe

This follows from the Son’s Kitchen #2 and #3 posts. The pictures show the waste arrangments for the washing machine, and the waste diagram in the dishwasher’s spec. My son has a notion he can use the existing waste pipe from the washing machine to channel the waste from the dishwasher, but I’m...

Son’s Kitchen #3 Dishwasher part 2: cold water feed

This follows from the Son’s Kitchen #2 post. On the picture is the cold water feed for the washing machine. Can I somehow piggy back on to that to provide a cold feed for the dishwasher? Some sort of T junction or adaptor?

Son’s Kitchen #2 Dishwasher part 1: altering units

Number 2 in the series. My son has an option to buy a second hand dishwasher, 2 feet (60cm) wide. He thinks he can fit it to the left of the washing machine in the picture, by sacrificing that cupboard. This will mean removing all the cupboard panels, leaving only the two vertical panels marked...

    Son’s Kitchen #1 Boiler enclosure

My son and his wife recently bought a house and have asked me several DIY questions about the kitchen. I need advice on all of them, so I will submit them as a series of posts (6 in all) starting ‘Son’s Kitchen’. As a general comment, this house was extensively renovated by the previous owner, a...
