    Celcon/Plasmor/other

As far as I'm aware, as I'm digging 1.5m down and filling to approximately 1.2m I don't think I'd have a problem regarding the footings. A lot of councils only ask you to dig 1m or maybe 1.2 so the fact that I'm going down to 1.5 probably makes little difference. I'm no expert (as it is shown...

Correct order of building an extension

What do you mean by slab level? I know of Damp Proof Course level. Is slab level DPC level where you would start using block/brick? Again, sorry for asking a stupid question.

Correct order of building an extension

Hi all I know this is going to sound like a really stupid question but I'd like to ask it anyway. It is regarding the correct order of building an extension. Once the footings have been dug and then filled with concrete does the bricklayer lay up to damp proof course level all the way...

    Celcon/Plasmor/other

Thank you for the advise. I'd rather save on the insulation value. As it is doubtful I will ever build on top of it. Meanwhile, now I've been convinced to use lightweight blocks, can anyone advise me which make. One bricklayer recommends using Plasmor blocks as they are better when it comes...

    Celcon/Plasmor/other

Hi all I'm looking at which blocks I should be buying for my extension. It will be a single story extension which will be the usual 2.4m high. I would like to use bricks with the potential of building above it in years to come. I doubt I will ever actually build on top of it but you never...

Filling the footings to make sure it is level

What I was going to do was put a peg in about 30-40cm deep in the ground and then measure that peg at 1.2m from the bottom of the footings. Then using the laser level to mark of all the other pegs at 1.2m high. Once they are all marked I was going to saw the top off so that each peg is exactly...

Filling the footings to make sure it is level

Should I leave the pegs/wooden stumps in once the concrete has been poured in? I'm just worried that if I push the pegs in about 30cm into the footings each meter (approx) then when I pull them out the concrete will fill the hole left and then it might not be level. Maybe I'm looking too...

Filling the footings to make sure it is level

I was going to use external ply boards against the sides (especially around the corners) to make sure that the hole stays as it should before it is filled. The ply boards will be propped up by having a piece of 4x2 squeezed in between the sheets.

Filling the footings to make sure it is level

I would have thought that to make sure that the first couple of courses of blocks/bricks to be level would require that the concrete is as level as possible.

Excuse my total ignorance but what do you mean by 'pegging'?

Filling the footings to make sure it is level

At the moment I'm at work so I haven't had a chance to read through most of the responses. I will do later on today though. Thank you again.

Filling the footings to make sure it is level

No, I don't have one  I've got a £50 voucher for Argos. Can you recommend one please. I don't mind spending a £120-£130 on one if needed. Should I get one with a tripod etc? What's this one like??? http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/7151718.htm

Filling the footings to make sure it is level

Hi there I'd just like some advice on how to make sure once the footings are dug that the concrete will be level when pumped into the footings. The hole will be 1.5m deep and the concrete will be 1.2m deep. I have been advised to use a water level kit. 1) I should get a steak...

Costing between pitched and flat roof

Hi all I'm looking at having an extension built and am wondering whether I should opt for a pitched or flat roof. Because I'm not too fused which I end up going for, the contributing factor will be the costing. I am hoping to extend 6m out and the usual height of a room. If...

Combi or System (Ideal or Vaillant)

Hi all I am posting this message on behalf of a friend of mine. He has a 4 bedroom house (one of which is a converted loft). He also has at least 3 showers and I think it was 4 (or maybe even 5) toilets. At the moment he lives there on his own but circumstances might change in time. He...

    Stuart Turner v Salamander

I'm actually not decided on who is going to do it yet. I've been messed about on prices and quotes so I'm still looking. I've decided that I'm going to buy all the parts myself and just pay for the labour. I am always wary as to how much the builder puts on top of parts. I prefer to...

    Stuart Turner v Salamander

Firstly, I hope this is in the right section!!! Can anyone give me their opinions on which make of pump is better. I was on the verge of buying a Stuart Turner until I went into a plumbing shop and they told me that plumbers recommend Stuart Turners as they are much easier to fit. His...
