Flashing On Slate Roof Against Stone Wall

Isn't it better to use lime mortar, rather than cement?

Torn felt inside roof - should I be worried?

As far as I know, felt doesn't actually stop water getting in, it just keeps dust out. Many roofs don't have felt at all (mine doesn't), and suffer no ill effects. You'll know if water gets in, the battens will start rotting if left.

    Roofing cost

My roof is nearly 100 years old. Its never been changed, as a result you can't crawl across the slates anymore, they're too brittle. Until they start falling off, I'm leaving it as it is.

    Cast Iron guttering

I just ftp the images to my webspace, provided by my ISP. If your ISP provides you with webspace, check their page for instructions on how to use it. Normally, you just open internet explorer, type the ftp: address into the address bar, enter your username/password, and then drag and drop...

    Cast Iron guttering

Well I'm finding it very hard to find a company that will supply and fit a CI soil pipe, so I may have to give up on that one. Perhaps somebody could manufacture a copper pipe, although I'm not sure how copper would look on my house. If I can't get that, I may have to settle for PVC (with a...

    Cast Iron guttering

Woah woah! I can't do the whole house at once you know! When I got this place, those windows were rotting away! The flat roof is none of my doing, and even so, there isn't a lot of room to put a pitched slate roof on there. Besides, flat roofs are hardly a modern thing. I had to make it...

    Strange sticky substance...

I had the same stuff around the edges of my floors, where the carpet didn't meet the wall. I removed it with a drill, metal sanding disc, and a wire brush (to clean the disc every few minutes). Its hard work, but it will come off eventually.

    Cast Iron guttering

Forgot to mention, I need a new soil pipe as well. I'm going for Cast Iron because I've been restoring as much as I can of the house, removing any modernisation as I go. This is why I'm going for a separate cistern and toilet bowl, pedestel sink, etc. I know its a lot of money, but...

    Cast Iron guttering

I'm going to have my bathroom completely stripped out and replaced, with edwardian-style appliances. Its going to be very expensive, what with the period tiling and all, so I'm getting the money from the mortgage provider. I reckon I might as well take care of the guttering on my house, as...

Need help finding an old screw type

Can anybody guide me to a shop that sells these type of screws? Its an original from a keeper (from a neighbour's house). I can't find any screws that have such a large rounded head. The normal rounded head screws from B&Q and such are more of an oval head. I also need some shorter...

    bit of electrical advice required

The wiring in my house is fine thanks. I didn't suggest that the fan need not have neutral, I said that you only really need to switch the live, for which you only need 2 wires?

    bit of electrical advice required

It should be quite simple. The fan should have a permanent supply from the lighting circuit, and 2 wires running from the fan to the switch, to control the on/off action of the fan (one red, the other black/bare) What markings are on the connector block on the fan?

Suitable wood for a long shelf

Hardwood, the thicker, the better. You'd probably be best searching in woodyards. Have a look around some reclamation yards, you might find a whacking great big piece of skirting board that with a bit of modification, would suit you.

    Glass Paneled doors

Goto a film/television facilities company, like Lighting Technology, and ask for some diffuser (used for softening tv lights, but will work for you). Its basically a translucent, almost opaque, plastic sheet (like sellophane), with no colouring. It will turn your door into a frosted panel...
