    Cracks on walls

Hello I have noticed some hairline cracks on the walls in an upstairs bedroom. I have posted some pics. <p> Should I be worried about them or is it just a matter of chipping out the cracks and re-filling it? Some of the others are alot smaller. Sorry if there a bit hard to...

    painting on fresh plaster

It was that old wood chip paper that was on, we live in an ex-council house. It was plaster behind. Anyway thanks for your advice, I'll keep my eye out for any problems and fix them when it happens. I weren't keen on stripping the paint! Phil

    painting on fresh plaster

I don't want to hijack this post but Richard C - how long do you reckon it will be before the paint starts 2 come away/peel from the wall then? Also would be best to strip it all and start again, we're talking the whole house here! Although my plaster isn't new and it had wall paper on it...

    painting on fresh plaster

When I painted my house about 2 years ago I didn't use a diluted coat as the first. I didn't realise this had to be done but anyway 2 years later no problems with flaking or peeling. I don't know if it makes any difference but the first coat of paint was sucked up by the plaster, it took 3 coats...

    How to repair this

Hello As a result of some new boiler pipes being fitted through the ceiling it caused some of the paint to crack. I have scraped away the loose and flaking paint and now I need to repair it. What is the best way of doing it? I'm not sure whether to fill it, caulk it, sand it...

    Hygroscopic salts?

So cavity wall insulation problems can't affect internal walls in anyway? Sorry if my questions are daft. I just want to gather as much info as I can :-) Aswell as these very helpful posts I've also got a friend coming round to have a look. Phil

    Hygroscopic salts?

Just to add, the company who insulated our walls use glass wool and ive researched it on the net. Apparently this type of insulation doesn't allow water to penetrate it so surely the problem can't be down the insulation? Your thoughts are welcome :-) Phil

    Hygroscopic salts?

Even though the problem is interior walls, it could still be due to the cavity insulation? Sorry if I didn't point out its interior! Thanks for your help. Phil

    Hygroscopic salts?

This is the worst area [/img] Not all the bumps in this pic are the problem, some are just wall imperfections. Although the affected paint just looked cracked and if rubbed brought off a white residue. Imagine rubbing your finger just above the skirting board in that pic, white...

    Hygroscopic salts?

Thanks for your replies :) The cavity wall insulation was done just over a year ago now which was through a grant. I've noticed the problem since but again, not sure if its always been there - sorry I can't be more specific. We've had central heating in the house since we moved in 5...

    Hygroscopic salts?

The house was built in the 1950's. It has cavity walls which have been filled with that stuff to keep the house warmer! Ground floor (concrete) just above the skirting boards. We had a condenser boiler fitted about a month ago but the problem started before this as far as I can...

    Painting over matt

Hello I decorated our house about a year ago, most of the rooms are matt white. Now I wish to apply a colour over the white but as I've had the paint on the wall for about a year would it be best to give it a quick wash down before the colour? Or would it be OK just to apply it straight on...
