Attic conversion, questions. Damp white spores on rafters

Converting attic to regs and ok standard. Not wanting to take tiles off, couple of questions. 1 Should I put a membrane on the inside before I add insulation between the rafters? The roof seems good and no obvious leaks in the past. 2 slightly counter to last comment, I've white spores on...

i have engineered wood oak in the bathroom

We're looking at wood, as warmer than tiles. It should say if suitable, so look at pack, ring place you got it. The ones we're looking at, engineered oak are stated as suitable for damp areas. If you're worried look at treatments and finishes you can add.

Broken and bolted purlin, dip in roof, what to do

Hi thanks for the replies, apologies for late reply myself. After looking at the neighbours, the brick support is standard building practice round here, for this type of house. They use a double purlin at the front for the whole width as there are no supporting walls up to the attic (brick...

Broken and bolted purlin, dip in roof, what to do

The photos below show the purlin in my attic, which looks like it has snapped a long time ago, snapping or splitting most of the rafters on that side, but has been repaired and doesn't look like it has moved in many many years. The Purlin has been bolted together and looks pretty secure (Why...

We have extended the kitchen, by removing a meter square landing at the top of the cellar stairs. We now want to put a door (bi-fold) opening into the kitchen, at the top of the stairs. The question is are there any regs about having a space behind the door, i.e. a floor level top step of say...

    Another Plastering under stairs question

Plastering under the new attic stairs, double winder. I've attached noggins across at the back of each step. Have read this post http://www.diynot.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=1803140#1803140 which was very useful. My questions are: Do you just use the email on the winders and plaster...

Bathroom sink with 50mm backed plasterboard question

Hi I'm insulating the exterior walls with plasterboard backed by 50mm insulation. In the bathroom I'll be having a sink hanging off the wall i.e. no pedestal. Is there any issue with the insulation? i.e. the bolts bolding the sink on have to pass through the insulation before the...

Re-fitting rubber seal on washing machine by the door

Hi We've been given a washing machine, but the rubber seal by the door is coming off. Is it held on by a circular metal wire, which uses a spring to keep it in place. What's the trick to getting the rubber seal back on? I've tried getting something under the wire in a similar fashion to...

    Stylish wired smoke alarm?

My climbing rope and harness are there to save lives too, yet the companies bring out different versions each year with different colour schemes that look nice. I don't think the purple in my harness saves me from falling anymore than a plain black one. People go to so much trouble to design...
