Please help - naive electrical calculations dont add up

No problem marra, I understand that often the regs aren't too intuitive. What you are planning is NOT acceptable. Screw terminal JBs under floorboards are NOT acceptable. They may have been in the past, I dunno when exactly the rules changed. Part of the reasoning is that (in general)...

    adiabatic and what to do

What I'm getting at is that if the SWA does not meet the requirements of a CPC, then the SWA cable no longer complies with the reg that says "earthed metallic covering suitable for use as a CPC", and thus, that type of SWA cable is useless. Even if you use a core or an external CPC, the...

Please help - naive electrical calculations dont add up

Nope. That's certainly not accessible, and thus not compliant with the regs. ANY SCREW TERMINALS MUST BE ACCESSIBLE. Having to lift floorboards means they aren't accessible, no matter how you try to dance around it. Choc-block shoved up into the ceiling void through the downlighter holes...

Please help - naive electrical calculations dont add up

What I mean is that "1.5mm for lighting, 2.5mm for ring finals" is what many electricians have been taught back when they did their apprenticeships, and "it's always been done like that" It's actually a good rule of thumb (for lighting circuits) to stick to, as 1.5mm on a 5/6amp OPD is...

    adiabatic and what to do

So, the SWA in 10mm^2 two core 90c XPLE does not meet the requirements for a protective conductor. So, an external protective conductor could be ran alongside it, but some reg says that "blah blah blah an earthed metallic covering that meets the requirements for a protective conductor..." So...

Please help - naive electrical calculations dont add up

Your lights will not be on rings, they will be radials. Your calculations are correct, 1mm^2 cable would suffice. 1.5 has been used as it was a standard circuit. You could use 1mm for your additions, but it would be sensible to use 1.5mm to keep the circuit the same throughout.

A Scouser's car key should do the trick.

    garage alarm wiring help

Not a hope in hell my son. Sorry. :( You will need to find out where each individual wire is connected, check in the instructions as to what goes where, and then connected them up.

    Plug-in spur advice needed please

Or at least replace the plugtop and socket with an FCU.

Where/how to plug in my portable hot tub?

The guy is either incompetent or is simply having you on with regards to the earth 'spike' (or both). Get another electrician, and simply ask him/her that you want an outdoor socket installed. PS. If you'd have followed the advice given to you you could have done this yourself weeks ago...

    Steam Shower cable and MCB

6mm cable on a B40 breaker should be fine in this installation.

    Conduit colours

No rules whatsoever mate. But marking them for your own benefit would be a good idea. :)

How would you split these loads?

Nowt wrong with that, homeboy. 2.5mm on a 16A OPD is fine.

Not a ring, not really a radial...

Bucking follcoks. I suppose my B32 6mm cooker circuit is not absolutely fine, because I might want to install an 18kW induction furnace. Stop trying to make yourself look impressive by spouting nonsense. Thanks.

Not a ring, not really a radial...

That is still classed as a radial circuit and as such is absolutely fine. :)

Test - please ignore this post

Maybe the test was to see if it was possible to post something on here without it immediately turning in to a pathetic multi-quoted argumentative debacle. Looking good (so far)! :D

    mk rcd split load unit

Banal, read what you wrote my son. You instantly thought that the OP was planning on doing an installation to the 16th, and with this your penis twitched and you seized the opportunity to have a pop at someone. You now get all arsey because I have pointed out that split load boards...

    Earth problems

YOU DON'T EARTH ANY OF THAT. EVER. THE ONLY THINGS THAT ARE EARTHED ARE ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES ETC. You need to read up on bonding - views differ on maintaining continuity through mixed metal/plastic installations. :?
