    mk rcd split load unit

:?: :?: :?: :?: :?: Does it? Really? So you don't think that a split load CU with a few circuits sharing an RCD, and the lights and other good stuff on individual RCBOs is a good idea? So you think that a "17th edition CU" complies with said edition? Or, more likely, was all this...

    Earth problems

You don't need to 'earth' any of what you're talking about. All you need to do is BOND the incoming water and gas mains. Bond them as they enter the property with 10mm^2 back to the Main Earth Terminal.

    Good thread.

    New kitchen earthing

FFS... The only bonding you need is that the incoming gas and water mains are bonded with 10mm as they enter the premises. There is no need to "earth" the sink or "bond" the boiler. Have you been reading Davey Knobfire's book?

Do you ejaculate everytime you paste (sorry) that in to a reply?

    Earthing type

You HAVE to ask the DNO. Only they can tell you what the earthing arrangement is on that supply. You can NOT make even an educated guess purely by looking at the incomer.

    Lighting electrics mystery

Glad you got it sorted mate. Maybe I was a little harsh, but such is the importance of electrical safety. I'm all for DIY, but with lecky you can't blag it!

    Lighting electrics mystery

Flamington has already told you. Connect the two reds together. One is the supply, the other if the feed to the switch. The black with red sleeving is the switched live coming back from the switch - this goes to the live terminal on the light. Neutral from supply cable to neutral terminal...

    Lighting electrics mystery

You sir, are an idiot. You have connected the switch so as to create a dead-short when closed. That's why it's tripping the breaker, and as you seem to have been doing it over and over you may well have blown the contacts in the switch. Have a look here and stop guessing.

RCD's and RCBO's...Whats the difference you may ask?

What on earth are you babbling on about Banal? No one is saying that an RCCB provides overcurrent protection (other than the OP 6 years ago). What we are saying is that an RCBO is an RCD.

RCD's and RCBO's...Whats the difference you may ask?

Erm, where did Risteard say it did? Of course an RCBO is an RCD, just as an RCCB is an RCD. Anyone who claims that a Residual current Circuit Breaker with integral Overcurrent protection is not a Residual Current Device is clearly an idiot.

    Any Motor Men Out There?

Hmmmmmmmmmmm........................! :) So if you use a low-reading ohmmeter (con tester) between V1-W1 it shows open circuit, but with a high-reading ohmmeter (IR tester / 'Megger') it shows 0.07ohms? Do you get the same when IR testing at 250 or 500v? I don't get what you are saying...

safe amps for choc blocks to sockets? (removing metal box)

Sorry mate, but you can't do that. You can't have concealed cables with no indication that they're there - the backbox with a blanking plate counts as an accessory and thus creates 'safe zones' around it - ie it's obvious that there are cables buried around it. That said, you can't have...

    outside lights

Bury the 12v flex if you want, or just leave it on the surface - it's only 12v, who cares? It's not going to hurt anyone (although don't put a spade through it!)

Too slow! Those plastic 'tube' type toothpicks also work well for small CSA wires, but are not too easy to find onsite!

    Any Motor Men Out There?

Right mate, thanks for your description of how the posh tester works, it was quite interesting (if you are an electrical geek! :D ) I reckon you have a short between V1 and W1 - the tester won't have picked this up because these are connected together anyway at the star point. To confirm...

    bootlace

They're not fiddly at all as long as you use the ferrule tool to get them on to the wires and don't fanny around trying to use a screwdriver or fingernail!
