honeywell 4073 diverter valve. Ist this right.

The manual arm is no indication of the position of the valve. When the valve is in one direction the lever is right over (you can't move it easily), but when the valve is over to the other side, the lever can be moved about quite easily. The sole purpose of the lever is to be able to hold the...

    Balancing Radiators

I have not been in my house very long and it is obvious that the rads are out of balance. I think it is probably went out of balance when the house was extended many years ago. They put in additional rads but did not bother to rebalance. I balanced the rads at my last house and it went like a...

    Forum Search

Just done an advanced search for the Exact Phrase: "cold radiator" (with and without quotes) in the Plumbing and Central Heating Forum. It returned the following: Your search - ("") forum_id:7 - did not match any documents. What does this mean? :? I would expect to see the search term...

    What size boiler

I thought I would check out both calculators you mention, so I did a google for mears calculator and eventually found their web site. If their product is the industry standard then the industry is still living before Industrial Revolution. Do they still use slide rules instead of calculators...

Am I right in thinking that the software running the forum, and consequently the search facility, has been developed "in house"? If so, why? :o There are many good programs available with tried and tested search facilities. Why re-invent the wheel?? :?

    What size boiler

I couldn't agree more, however I am sure most readers would be bored stiff with detailed calculations of room sizes, volumes, U-values, etc etc!! However I have just recalculated the figures as I discovered that the inner skin of the outside wall is Thermalite and not breeze block. This means...

    What size boiler

So are they actually identical, apart from the fact that the 18Ri has had the wick turned up? (and you pay £50 for the privilege!) I have suspected this was the case. Ignorant? No way. But I do become suspicious when the person quoting does not bother finding out what size boiler is already...

    What size boiler

Net output. Why do you ask? Don't all manufacturers quote net output in their sales literature? I have found that you usually have to dig quite deep (in the technical sections) to find the boilers gross input and gas consumption.

    What size boiler

I downloaded the Barlo Rads "Heatloss" program which comes up with very similar figures to the SEDBUK ones. I also downloaded "Superheat 5" from SDA, which calculates the SAP rating and this came up with very similar heatloss figures to all the other programs. So I don't think I am way out in...

    What size boiler

I just want to be able to understand how an installer would arrive at the correct size of boiler to specify. The 18, suggested in the quotes seemed to be based just on the size of the house (How many bedrooms do you have?) without finding out what was already installed. That is a logical...

    TRV's and thermostat location

Meanwhile, back at the original question! But is the present location the coldest? It is just outside the kitchen with a cooker, washing machine, tumble dryer, fridge/freezer etc giving out heat. And, as I said in my original post, the door to the living room is never closed, so there is a...

    TRV's and thermostat location

I am helping my son install TRV's and better controls in his 3-bed terrace house. The upstairs is no problem -TRV's on all rads; but I am unsure as to what to do downstairs. A sketch of the ground floor can be seen at...

    What size boiler

So the manufacturer can produce a fits-all-houses boiler and leave it to the installer to set it up? I wonder if BMW will be willing to sell me an M5 with the engine limited to 90bhp for pottering around the town? But how does the installer know what to set the output to? If it's a properly...

    What size boiler

OK. But an 18kW boiler costs more than an 11kW and if the 18kW boiler never runs at more than 11kW you have spent money unnecessarily! Yes, I did allow 3kW. But please explain why modern cylinders are so Watt-hungry. I have only been in the house 18 months, so I don't know when the...

    What size boiler

My boiler is nearly 20 years and only 65% efficient so I think its about time it was replaced! I have received three quotations and all have suggested a larger boiler -18kW; the current boiler is 14.7kW. I have done a quick calculation, based on the sizes of the radiators and output...

    Sinking Conservatory Roof

Could you explain this a bit more - I am confused :? Do you mean: put a 2m long plate on each side of the beam from house to window? I think the purlin is in two pieces - you can see steel straps in the photo connecting them to the mainbeam - so it should be possible to remove them while the...
