Transformer in circuit with extractor fan..

Voltage spikes can be mitigated by the use of a varistor accross L and N. Other than laying in a separate feed, the addition of supression components like that is the most likely solution. Or if the makers have a helpline call it, and ask them why they are selling something unsuitable for...

How do i wire these 2 lights (HELP)

OK, If the suggestion was correct, while what you have done would not have allowed the outside light to be switched, as the link goes straight to the wire going out, not through the swirtch, but this should not have blown anything, just the light would be on all the time... So, it is not...

    MCB

If you can guarantee the circuit impedance is low enough to trip the breaker rapidly in the event of a fault, yes, it is OK. In practice, this will be true if the wire length is less than ~ 40m to the furthest point ( assuming wired in 1mm sq), or more like 60m if the cable is 1.5mm sq...

How do i wire these 2 lights (HELP)

On the back of the switch there are 2 comm terminals, one for one side one for the other. It is being suggested that you place a short link of any colour you like , but red would be sensible, between them, so they are both feed from the red that comes in with the black. So red + black go to...

Consumer Unit for Extension & Shed

The shed will need an RCD, as presumably the chances of plugging in a garden tool are high. Idealy not the same RCD as the rest of house, other wise any trips will be a nuiscence ! Almost any solid looking DINM rail CU will do, but realise that differnt makers use slightly differnt size brekers...

    mcb,s

The current capacity is needlessly limited by the MCB in this case. Not dangerous though.

    Lights and lamps flickering

If it is their side of the network that is at fault, they will pay to repair it, -unless you damaged it. They may charge you for a waste of time call out though, so get all the wiring on your side of the meter checked first.

    advice please on wiring socket

If the total load is less than 3000Watts, it will be OK for a single spur plus multi-way extension lead. Ratings will be on the equipment.

    shower electics

When it vanishes not if. Unless you want to take the million year view that it will be renewed after the humans have left the planet. Dont get too smug, just because France has nuclear power, does not mean no oil is needed, the uranium it uses has to be brought half way round the oweld by...

What to do with existing cables when re-wiring

Remove totally if in tubing, pull the end and you will see if it moves or not, otherwise cut as short as poss at ends, and plaster over. If left accessible, because cable is good enough for possible future re-use, then terminate in a junction box or similar and mark up clearly.

Taking a spur back to consumer unit??

Figure of eight rings can cause strange current sharing between the 2 sides of the ring, and overload one of the supply cables, depending how it is done, and are not approved. Either extend the ring, or have a fused spur.

    VIBRATING LIGHT SWITCH

capitals are used to indicate shouting and words to be read in a bad temper, so be carefulwhen you use them. If you have, or can borrow, a meter with an AC volts range , you can measure to see if there is any voltage betwen the exposed metalwork, and sometihng you know to be earthed -...

    Earthing

The reason it can be done in some places and not others is simply the quality of the suppliers overhead cables - if it goes on singles, then the neutral must be the lower of the two cables, and there must be no joints in the combined neutral-earth wire, that rely on a single bolt, and there...

    mcb,s

It will be safe, if non-standard. Why not fit a 32A breaker into the box in that position and make a conventional ring, or leave it at 20A and do a radial ?

    advice please on wiring socket

You need to either find out the type of existing cable (measure cores diameter and calculate cross-section area of copper) If it is not written on it by the maker! Then, it may or may not be possible to add more load. If the fuse (not the rating of the main switch, but the fuse) is appropriate...

    Mains power cable between properties

If the cable belongs to the electricity board (DNO), and from what you describe it is hard to tell, even if the neighbours wanted to move it, they probably couldn't, as the board would have to dig up the road, possibly turn off supplies to the whole street etc to put in a new supply ot your...

    Bathroom Lighting

    upstairs lights have tripped out

Unless you, or your father or brother can understand wiring diagrams and loop through rose lighting wiring, then withouttrying to patoniose, you should best seek outside help. Do either of you own or know how to use a simple multimeter for example? Are they familer with the layout of the wiring...

    cooker hood wiring

Glad it helped - er which post was this? Please make sure any cable from the 30A supply before the fused spur is at least rated for short circuit protection by the 30A MCB, if its less than a couple of metres I'd suggest 2.5mm minimum. (it cannot carry more than 27A indefinately, but the spur...
