    Ducting ??

Normally it can be direct buried if the ground is soft (free of sharp stones that might tear the jacket and cause the steel to rust). If the ground is not nice, or there is a risk of disturbance then either a sand filled trench, or piping ducts may be used. In a domestic setting this is normally...

Problem with new celing light - help please!

You have 'loop through rose' wiring. Common in the UK - rather than confuse you with a long winded description, there is a diagram in the reference section. - i suggest you print it out. Note you do NOT have 2 lives and 2 neutrals. You have one live, one neutral, and pair of wires that happen...

    halogen downlights in bathroom..

If you have a TLC near you, or can stand the postage http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Main_Index/Transformer_Index/Lighting_Transformers/index.html As you have 80 watts of lamps, I'd suggest a 100watt trannsformer as a minimum (no point in pushing it to its limit) Unless you wanted to split the...

    halogen downlights in bathroom..

If it causes corrosion, and the corrosion products bridge between the contacts, (or between windings on the transformer itself) it is possible. Otherwise it will cause a leakage current, but not much compared with what the lamps will be taking. If it is an electronic transformer (i.e. a high...

Why metal junction box for SWA cable?

The problem is purely mechanical. The SWA is quite stiff, and all but the thickest walled plastic boxes will flex alarmingly, and then may not close properly, even if they don't shatter, if the SWA decides its going to straighten out or twist due to small alignment errors. (the tail wags the...

    Hob Help needed

It is nothing to do with the 6mm cable - is it a split phase cooker? (i.e. was there a second live terminal?) If so that needs linking in to the supply too, sometimes there is a link in the bag of giblets, sometiles an offcut of wire is needed. Otherwise its a fault in the hob itself.

How to test a consumer unit/house

a good place to start is here.http://www.tlc-direct.co.uk/Book/8.8.4.htm and pages linked off it. If this makes sense then yes you can test.

    Using a multimeter

I can make one hand colder than the other by imagining it is under running water. Odd, remember trying it at university, and being almost as sceptical as those who witnessed it. Two thrmometers, one in each hand, and wait, one goes up, one down, then swap thoughts, and wait it swaps too... I...

    halogen downlights in bathroom..

IF the transformer is cold when it stops working, then check for good contacts at all lamp holders and at the tranny end - the other thing that will make the tranny shut down and sulk is either a short circuit or an overload.

Switched Fused Connection Unit + Oven

Many things become more dangerous when part P is followed to the letter - this is my main objection to it - it is NOT encouraging electrical safety at all, but, at least at the current rates of charging for inspections, it encourages the increased use of extensions and flexes as "temporary...

    Using a multimeter

seconded. Dont want the resistance of those shaking hands to confuse things - on the higher ranges (20k plus) you will be able to see your own body resistance if you grip the probe tips tightly. To the unwary this can look like a real reading.

Switched Fused Connection Unit + Oven

Your local authority will be the only people who can answer that finally for your case, but I'd suggest if you have already done it, then forgetting to mention it to them now is probably the minimum hassle policy, though not strictly legal - but I and many others will not shop you ! I fear if...

    Using a multimeter

Ohms. (also called resistance/continuity) With the power to the circuit off. First, put the meter on an ohms range, if the probes do not touch each other, the reading will be whatever the meter shows for no connection (inf, infinity, a big 1 or what ever - remember this ) Then touch the...

Switched Fused Connection Unit + Oven

3000watts is fine on a 13A plug. You can just plug it in like an applience. If you go down Kai's route, a new cooker circuit is notifiable under part P. (PS proper cooker circuits are not rings, but radials - only one set of wires betweeen fuseboard and cooker point. If you were to go to the...

    can I do it??

No breach of the building regs procedures can be prosecuted after 6 months have elapsed, as the offence is non-inditable (i.e. Magistrates Court only). The same limitation restricts the absolute maximum fine to 5K, which is very unlikley to be imposed in any case, despite what some bodies who...

    wiring to outside shed.

OK, you will not need to have a 63A supply to your new CU, if you are just doing a 16A radial for power and the 6A breaker for one light fitting. (40ft... 12m) yes voltage drop OK on 2.5mm at 20A load. You will need to work out what those old fuses are feeding - it may be that one...

Who is using my electricity - meter spinning no mcbs on

Are you saying that with all MCBS off, but the main incomer switch on, the meter rotates, but with that double pole switch in the off position, it doesn't? If so I am puzzled too, as if the meter was drifting from its internal consumption alone, then that would be independant of the position...

    can I do it??

I should be inclined to worry more about the quality of the jobs he has done in the past , than the paper qualifications - if he knows what he is doing, and has an established base of customers happy to recommend, he may well be better than a freshly qualified newbie ...
