    personally i prefer tight joints, they look alot neater. if you are using bricks with a good clean edge you can get away with a wider joint-say 12mm,if not stick to 10mm

    You will need the multi purpose adhesive as normal dry wall wont work.I'd recommend the one by british gypsum As for pva,i would recommend just one coat,when i have been reskimming before, too much pva doesnt let the plaster stick,im thinking the same will happen with the dry wall adhesive...

    condensation in chimney stack

    as someone else said,check that the chimney is still able to breath through a vented cap. if the stack has been taken down say to roof level, then put another air brick in near the top, this well help to circulate air through the stack and hopefully alleviate the problem
