How difficult is it to install outside front door lights?

We are looking to install some mains powered outdoor up/down lights on either side of our front door. How big of a job is it? And is there any advice on how to route the cabling for this? Is it an easy DIY job? How much should a ball park cost be for a qualified electrician to install...

What is this round grey drain cap? (Ed.)

Thanks both. If we don't intend on using it, is there an easy way to make it flush with the floor so we can lay laminate flooring over it as it's currently standing proud of the floor?

What is this round grey drain cap? (Ed.)

Just bought a new house, and after stripping out an old secondary sink and kitchen units that were in the basement and then stripping up the floor, there is this round grey plug. There is a similar one that the kitchen and washing machine waste pipe runs into, so I'm assuming it's something like...

    Outside PIR floodlight question

The socket debris isn't a problem for me. Like I said earlier, we have only just purchased and moved into the house and doing some of the initial renovations, such as painting, flooring, and removing random things like this floodlight. Once decorated, all sockets and switches and light fixtures...

    Outside PIR floodlight question

Doesn't look like anything easily identifiable on the double socket next to the patio door where the floodlight is:

    Outside PIR floodlight question

Just been thinking, how would I identify if the neutral is connected behind the sockets or in one of the light fixtures? Is there any way of detecting with a volt stick or similar if I turn on the switch for the floodlight and have everything else switched off? I contacted a local...

    Outside PIR floodlight question

So would the Screwfix box linked to a couple of posts back work for having a wall mounted box to connect the wires into?

    Outside PIR floodlight question

So what's the alternative to burying them into the wall in this case?

    Outside PIR floodlight question

So what's the best option in this case to be able to remove the floodlight? If I take down the light fixture nearest it, would it give any hints, as there are 2 light fixtures in the room where the patio door is, as you can see in the first pic a couple of posts ago showing where the switches...

    Outside PIR floodlight question

So does that mean my only solution is to buy a junction box, turn off all CU, snip the cable, terminate in the junction box, and then attach it to the wall, then turn CU back on? And if that's the case, would something like this do the job...

    Outside PIR floodlight question

Unfortunately, the walls seem too thick as no AC detected by my detector, and as for metal, it appears there is a steel beam across the top of the patio door or something as it constantly trigger when getting anywhere close to it's entire length. I have discovered an outer conduit though, but...

    Outside PIR floodlight question

Part of the reason I'm wanting to remove to remove the eye sore element of it though, so a junction/termination box would still leave me with that issue, so I'm ideally wanting to completely remove all trace if possible.

    Outside PIR floodlight question

The walls in the property are pretty thick, so the only thing I have is a stud/metal/electrics detector and the volt stick, and I think the walls are too thick for both.

    Outside PIR floodlight question

Here are photos of it. The outside floodlight: The wire coming out of the property into the floodlight: The 4 way switch panel that controls the light (the 4th switch turned on is one that turns on floodlight as confirmed by volt stick in later picture): The wiring coming out of the wall...

    Outside PIR floodlight question

So So for a simple layman who is a willing DIYer, but not an electrician, what should be the dummies guide-like step by step I should go through to remove this?

    Outside PIR floodlight question

Yes. There is a switch box in the basement that has 4 on/off light switches on it. The 4th of the switches is for the floodlight.

Thanks. I assume you mean from the switch end then?

    Outside PIR floodlight question

How can I easily identify which cable is the one from the floodlight to disconnect from the switch?

    Outside PIR floodlight question

Thanks! On the switch end, how do I know which of the cables is the floodlight cables? If its the 4th switch of the 4 on the switch panel, is there an easy way to identify? I do actually have a post in the Alarms thread seeking advice to address the ADae Optima Compact alarm unit but yet to...

    Outside PIR floodlight question

Thanks for this. I think you were typing your reply as I posted my last post. I've traced it now but wondering how to remove safely.
