Hi, Is there a place for the old cable colours in modern society or are the old red/black reels I have skip fodder?

    Door casings on solid walls

Hi all, Two of the internal doorways on my house are solid 9" brick. Is it regular practice to make the door casing the same width or would you use a 4" casing then plaster the remainder? Many thanks.

    Extractor fan fitting

Mine were core drilled then had a piece of [5"?] sewer pipe inserted to act as a sleeve. Fan and vent then just push into each end. Don't forget you need a 3 pole isolator before the final connection to the fan for maintenance purposes.

    Quick question on chopping out....

Thanks for the replies - should've mentioned the walls are already back to bare brick. I'm dotting and dabbing because, as davy says, its a quick easy fix when the walls are so bad. Might just chop 5mm or so to be sure they're not proud of the finished surface.

    Quick question on chopping out....

Hi all, If I wanted to fit a socket backbox to a wall which was going to be dot and dabbed does the box actually need chopping into the wall at all? I'm guessing that with 12mm board plus the adhesive you are not far short of the depth of a box so wondered whether I was would be wasting...

    Meter board riddled with woodworm.

All thats on the board is the meter and the fuse. The CU is mounted separately on the brickwork above. Hoping they'll come out and replace FOC.

    Lead main leaking

Thanks, I'll give that a try as a temporary fix. Do you know whether it is 'normal' practice to route mains pipes such as this under the floor of the house (the shortest route to the tap in the road) or do they generally follow the perimeter of the house?

    Meter board riddled with woodworm.

Hi all, The wooden board on which my meter is mounted is riddled with woodworm and is very fragile. Does the responsibility for replacing this lay with the electric board and at their cost? Many thanks.

    Lead main leaking

Hi all, The house that I'm renovating has a lead main which emerges from the ground up the external brickwork before going through the wall to the stopcock inside the house. The pipe is leaking at the point where it enters the house. Is it the responsibility of the water board to fix at their...

    concreting a floor

Hi all, I have an outside loo on the end of the house which I want to convert to an inside loo. My question relates to the floor. Currently its blocks laid on a bed of sand laid onto earth. How deep should I dig this out to be able to concrete it? Having dug it out do I just lay a...

    Advice on damp please.

Yes its exposed brick. Some of the faces have blown and its been very poorly re-pointed in some areas. It would be very difficult to make a nice job re-pointing which is why I'm considering render.

    Advice on damp please.

Softus, the moisture can only be from the rain getting in through porous mortar- the damp areas are at head height on the external wall with no drainpipes etc. If this is the case then would render cure it?

    Advice on damp please.

Thanks for your reply, RCS. As far as I can make out this house has solid external walls with no obvious sign of a cavity or dpc. There is only 2-3" difference in height between the level of the floor inside and the ground outside - is this enough? Should it be 6"+? If this could be the...

    Advice on damp please.

Ok, so I've had an 'expert' round with his so called damp meter and guess what? They recommend chemical treating the whole house. Oh and by the way I'm not touting for work but the joists have got woodworm. Any thoughts on this one... When I started this house a month ago there was...

Using sds drills on rotary stop

Hi, Are there any issues with using an sds drill on rotary stop for prolonged periods - are you supposed to lubricate the attachments? If so how often? what with?

    Advice on damp please.

Thanks for your reply. I know what you mean about the damp proof people and their meters and I definitely don't want ripping off! On the outside wall the ground level is only around 3" lower than the internal floor so presumably this could be a problem? However one of the internal...

    Advice on damp please.

Hi, The house I'm renovating is suffering from penetrating damp. Is rendering or some kind of textured coating a suitable fix? I'd prefer to repoint except its been bodged so many times it will be difficult to end up with anything thats looks ok. In other areas there is evidence of rising...
