Gaps between skirting boards and engineered wood flooring

Hello A couple of years ago we had our house renovated and put engineered wood over the old floorboards. I think there is some ply, as well as the underlay. Skirting boards were also new. In general its all good but there is one part of the house, my bedroom, where the drafts are a bit of a...

    Is this considered Permitted Development

How about if we do a rectangular extension starting on the current extension rear wall? I.e. we keep current extension and the new extension does not follow the diagonal boundary, rather it just goes 90 degree from that point. Would this be PD?

    Is this considered Permitted Development

Ah I see. Yeah in your picture x is larger than y/2 (only by a little less than 1m..). I was thinking differently: if the extension is original, one could argue that the diagonal wall is original and one would be able to extend following that line (similar to what would happen in a rectangular...

    Is this considered Permitted Development

Hm understand but if the angled old extension is considered as "original house", what is the side wall that needs to be considered? Surely the small angled wall on the existing extension is also an "original side wall"? Meaning that one should be able to continue that line?

    Is this considered Permitted Development

Hello We are In the process of planning a single storey rear extension. We have one already 1.5m long and the plan is to demolish it and build a longer 3m extension. All people told me this would be PD but my engineer has the view that most likely we need planning permission. The reason is...

    Exterior wood paint inside

Well the paint is Exterior Eggshell. According to the below it is safe to use in toys so I guess it should be fine? Our Estate Emulsion, Estate Eggshell, Modern Emulsion, Modern Eggshell, Exterior Masonry, Exterior Eggshell and Full Gloss have all been independently tested and approved to meet...

    Exterior wood paint inside

We need to paint a front door and some parts of the stairs inside and we are decided on a particular Farrow and Ball colour. Our builder suggested to get all exterior eggshell (+undercoat). We can split it and get some exterior and some estate (interior) eggshell but it will end up costing...

    Asbestos in chimney boarding?

Can this be asbestos? A builder said it definitely is, but our buildings survey did not identify it (he did identify in a different outbuilding, a garden shed). I am very scared now.. it's right there in the living room. We are planning to redecorate soon but still..

    Help putting back shower valve

Hello We had a new bathroom fitted 6 months ago, today I was cleaning the shower valves and one of them simply snapped off. It is one of those thermostatic mixer valves. The cartridge is Ok, in fact I can put the valve back and move it and the shower works fine, but the valve is a bit loose and...

    TrVs not working?

Interesting about the manual valve, makes sense. I know TRVs don't actually control the temperature of the radiator, but they help to the feeling of that. If the room is warm then the rad will heat up occasionally so it won't be as hot to touch I suppose, compared with being on for a long...

    TrVs not working?

    TrVs not working?

Hi We moved to this house about 6 months ago, in need of renovation. At the beginning all the radiators worked fine but with the caveat that they were always super hot, the TrVs don't seem to do anything to them. Since then we did all upstairs including new plumbing and radiators -- we left...

Help me understand my HW system

No wall thermostat just timer. Mind you this is a temporary set up, since next year we will replace with another system. But winter is coming so want to understand it well. So to confirm: the water in the cylinder only goes to the taps, right? If I want to increase water temperature to the...

Help me understand my HW system

Hi I have a gravity fed system. Standard boiler downstairs, hot water cylinder in first floor, cold water tank in loft. I want to understand how to control the temperature of the water used for different purposes. The boiler has a dial (no temperature settings just dial min 1 2 .. max), the...

Sorry I mean taps :) I was reading a few things online and the word stayed in my mind. Not being a native English speaker makes me more prone to mix up American/British terms

    Water softener installation

Thanks! Well it's not just cleaning it's scale build up in the faucets and so on.. don't want this to ruin all the water fixtures, the new radiators etc.. I used to live in a hard water area before but this one seems much worse! My supplier characterizes it as 'very hard' Currently we have a...

    Water softener installation

Hi I'd like to install a water softener in our house because it's just too hard. We did our bathroomcompletely new a few months ago and it's a royal pain to keep it nice without cleaning constantly which we don't have time for. Our mains comes out in the kitchen and it's a bit far from the...

    Wet patch on kitchen wall

On a side note: that big waste pipe seems to be open at the bottom end before making any connection to any drain or gully. Is that ok? I am not sure toilet waste goes down that pipe but if it does, sounds like very unhealthy. We never have any sort of foul smell, if that helps.
