    Time to plant a hedge....

Would I be crazy planting a privet hedge now? Intending to get some 90cm specimens to plug a gap. Thanks, M

That was 33 days of hard work ;-)

    Lighting controllers

Looks great but doesn't seem to come with manual override wireless switch, just the low voltage wired controller. Supply and ideal switch location are at the opposite end of the house. Has anyone come across Wise Controls? I can't find much first hand experience.

    Chased into a loadbearing wall

How deep is the chase? looks like they have just taken off the render. Is this the only option as a box in the corner would be more practical solution.

Larch - as a deck - to treat or not to treat

Thanks, it's all off the ground and there will be no pooling water. I wonder weather something like teak oil will give it some water and dirt repellence, yet let it silver with time? I've used ronseal total wood clear preserver for a lot of projects but I'm usually painting afterwards. It...

    Chain saw sculptors?

OK, a few jobs involving 'Wood' at the moment. I have two 200mm square Oak gate posts. I probably over egged the dimensions, and I had every intention to shape them into a curve or a point, but couldn't quite figure the geometry in relation to my 185mm circular saw... ok I've been...

    Tree stump removal

You can dig that one out... keep going. Stump grinders are a last cosmetic resort for something that size ;)

Larch - as a deck - to treat or not to treat

I'm half way through installing my English larch deck. I chose it because I wanted a compromise between the cost (or ethical sourcing) of hardwood and the thin green tanilised stuff that adorns the sheds. I'm impressed. Solid, heavy, straight, good looks, sound knots etc. Our intention is...

LightwaveRF new user - good so far

I bought one of their dim low energy lights and PIR switch. Worked for 9 months and the bulb went. Unfortunately not user serviceable so I reverted to good old manual. Seems they've extended the range, I certainly didn't find it to be set up and forget at the time (repeated re-pairing) which...

    Man Cave Wifi

I've got a BT branded repeater - you place it towards the edge of range and guess what it 'repeats' :-) I was surprised how effective it is. It reaches my man cave 22m away.

    Lighting controllers

I have four outdoor lighting circuits radiating from an outhouse. I would like to site an internal switch for each circuit and also PIR's independently. The cream on the top would be an all circuit trigger linked to my alarm panel (TBC). The switch should be wireless to avoid additional...

    Gas hob yellow flame

We have a gas rangemaster, one of the gas hobs has started burning with a yellow flame and soot. I've taken the moveable parts off and given it all a good clean. What should I be looking for? Thanks

    Handrail bracket

I suspect my search terms are at fault! I'm looking for a handrail bracket to fix external oak handrails to newel posts. I guess it'll be a simple stainless steel angle bracket of the correct dimension. Any tips? Thanks

    Oak Decking - what fixing?

I have some oak decking (grooved) to lay. I understand the need for stainless steel fixings but what is the best way to fix oak decking as discreetly as possible. Or is it a simple case do drill countering an screw from the top? Thanks,

    RCCB tripping

To close off the thread. Electrician around today, RCCB tripping at 16mA so replaced with the above replacement. I didn't realise there were terminal covers on the old device which simply slotted onto the new device. Job done. Interesting (for me anyway) that washer, tumble drier...

    RCCB tripping

Yes Crabtree 528/030 Ordered a 2 pole replacement but couldn't find this part number, and having received it, it's got exposed electrical parts rather than being panel mount. Damn.

    RCCB tripping

Good point about unplugging appliances, now I feel stupid. Sadly my decent multi-meter doesn't have a current clamp but thanks for the tip on outdoor sockets. I think you might have something there as I recall constantly tripping the RCD on the consumer unit when using my circular saw, I...

    RCCB tripping

The RCCB (80A, 30mA trip) in our meter box keeps tripping. Given it's an intermittent fault I've avoided an investigation and with a 2 week holiday looming and on average once per week trip, it's time to do something about it. I've monitored it for about a year (dabble with home automation)...
