    Propane or MAPP

Again, many thanks for all the suggestions. Yes, will be going to the mobile guy myself, not calling him out. And yes, drilling is the last resort. I'm almost certain that once it is out, the threads will be like new, as has been the case of virtually every bolt I have removed from the car.

    Propane or MAPP

If I cut down the centre and then drilled from the thread end, would only have to go half the distance and with luck, would be able to punch the head end out. Would be nice to keep the thread but a longer M12 and nut would do the trick.

    Propane or MAPP

Will go the weld route first. Drilling and replacing is definitely a thought but I don't have access to a heavy duty bench drill. Don't fancy trying with my battery drill. The reason for this replacement is having removed the strut, the rear spring has broken at the top. Based upon the rust...

    Propane or MAPP

That is a definitely, not a chance in hell suggestion. It is unfortunately, not a through bolt with a nut on the other side; it's a Ford Mondeo design and that would be too easy. I The image shows the problem; on the plus side, I have found that my Irwin bolt extractors are very good at...

    Propane or MAPP

Mondeo mk3 from 2003. Rear strut fits into the knuckle and has a pinch bolt that is threaded into a captive thread on one side of the knuckle. Bloody stupid design when a straight nut and bolt would do the same clamping job. It's an M12 so the head is not so large. Perhaps a stupid...

    Propane or MAPP

Again, very grateful for your advice. Will try a heat / Plusgas cycle on the thread first and hammer on a smaller socket. I also have an impact driver so perhaps a good hit will release it. If all fails, I know a local mobile welding expert and could swing by with a suitable bribe! Will let...

    Propane or MAPP

Thank you, beery grateful for the information. In applying heat, does it make any difference that it is a pinch bolt, so not only is the threaded part rusted together but probably also the non-threaded part? Unfortunately, previous attempts to loosen is while the strut is on the car, has...

    Propane or MAPP

Gentlemen, Thank for your replies. One thing I am not clear about, the general consensus is to heat the bolt. I know everything will expand, but surely one should heat the surrounding area in a attempt to expand the hole rather than expand the bolt? Your thoughts appreciated.

    Propane or MAPP

What ho one and all, Will probably have to use heat to remove my car's suspension strut, pinch bolt as it is now rust 'welded.' I have a standard plumbers torch with a cannister of propane (or may be butane?) but have been advised that MAPP will be hotter. First question, would either butane...

    House Insurance (again)

Have not checked the comparison sites yet but that is on the list. I do my road neighbourhood Watch and to the best of my knowledge, I do not live in a crime 'hot spot.' A reasonably affluent area but definitely not 'hot.' I have never made a claim on my 15 year old house. Does not make any...

    House Insurance (again)

What ho one and all, My house insurance is due and having received emails from the comparison web sites that I checked last year. the current "best" offer is £2000, increased from £350!!! Wow, I can hardly believe my good luck. Have spoken with the current insurer and Direct Line, both of...

    Clean an outside U bend

Agreed regarding suggesting the tenants do not put fat/oil down the drain. I have ask previously, and they say they are using liquid detergent in the washing machine and wipe the pans before washing. But what do I know. They are actually good tenants so assume they are doing what they say...

    Clean an outside U bend

I have a f/f maisonette which is rented to some very considerate tenants. I don't know their cooking style, but the outside drain / U bend (just below ground level)frequently blocks with a 'fatball' and results in smelly water flowing over the g/f owners patio. My tenant has cleared the...

    Painting Chrome

The two most important works for a happy marriage are 'Yes dear!' The decision has been taken out of my hands by someone on a higher pay grade than myself, so I have said 'Yes dear.' It will be the Ideal Standard three spray pattern head. Should have done a bit more research and gone with the...

    Painting Chrome

It is chromed plastic. I did see the ID head as in the above link, but without actually being able to see how the spray is, I am slightly loath to buy it. The old one has only one pattern, and no built-in technology. Just want a good stream of water, not so fine that it kinda splashes...

    Painting Chrome

What ho one and all, X years ago, I installed an ideal standard bath and dual mixer tap with shower attachment. The shower head is very basic but does give a good shower. Over the intervening years, the chrome on the head is flaking so have replaced with another head, but it fives a very poor...

    LCD moisture

What ho one and all, Have a Cuisnart kettle (https://www.cuisinart.co.uk/signature-collection-multi-temp-kettle-CPK17BPU.html) which has annoyingly, developed moisture behind the clear cover for the LCD display. I cannot see how to remove the handle / whatever I need to remove to just dry...

    Dyson battery vac

Problem solved. Not surprisingly, a new battery is all it needed. Thanks for the suggestions.

    Dyson battery vac

Got to agree with you. Will buy a replacement and give it a go. I find these days, one of the problems with everything being battery operated, when it stops, although the most logical conclusion is battery, one does tend to think that the device is faulty.
