    3 Inch Breeze block walls

Hi guys, a client of mine has told me about some of the internal walls in his house. He has a mid 1930's semi and says that the 1st floor internal walls are made from breeze blocks which are no more than 3" in depth. I know the ones which he is talking about as I've seen these in my old house...

    Garage electrics

Thanks all, lots of good ideas coming out here..... One more question, I have a number of metal patress boxes spare, I know these are supposed to be used inside walls, but is it illegal to have these fitted on top of walls or is it just bad practice? Not sure I've got enough plastic...

    Garage electrics

So many options.... !!!! The pipe bender that I have works with metal pipes, but having said that, I don't want to go over the top with cost. The only reason I wanted to use copper tubing was because I have a fair amount of it spare. But the idea about someone mistaking it for water...

    Garage electrics

Now you've made me really want to put all the cabling in metal conduit !!!! - The pipe bender can handle metal pipes too but I'm not sure where I can buy these metal pipes from? I did consider just using some old copper pipes that I have laying around (the bender also can be used with copper...

    Garage electrics

I'm looking to replace the electrics as there are literally only 2 plug points in the entire garage, both connected to a radial circuit. Everytime I need to use any power tools, I have to rummage around for extension cables etc and so I want to increase the number of plug points, I also want...

    old cable after a job

I'd have thought that as long as the customer doesn't mind it, you can take the old cabling etc. Copper prices are through the roof at the moment and I'm surprised that anyone would throw the cabling away - take it to scrap metal dealers and get some money for it.

    Garage electrics

Hi all, I'm thinking of rewring the attached garage, I understand that this is notifiable work, but as I understand it, its's also something that anyone competent can do themselves as long as it is then checked by an electrician afterwards. In order to have the inspection passed, what are...

    Electrics and loft insulation

Lovelly jubbly - that's my weekend booked in that case !!!! Will try laying the cables above the insulation as I think there should be enough slack, but good to know that it can also be done by leaving it under theinsulation too - cheers all.

    Electrics and loft insulation

I have 1.5mm t&e cabling for the upstairs lights - which are just standard ceiling pendant/rose type lights. Would it still be a bad idea to leave this type of cable under/inbetween the insulation?

    Electrics and loft insulation

Brilliant - like most ideas, this one has now expanded into me upgrading the loft insulation as well..... as I understand it, the lighting cabes in the loft should be moved out of the way and then placed above the loft insulation right? but if there is not enough give in the cables, is it safe...

    Electrics and loft insulation

Thanks guys.... do you know if these covers can also be used in a loft in that case? if light fittings etc can be covered with these and then insulation be placed over the top of them?.

    Electrics and loft insulation

Hi all, at hte entrance to my house I have a porch. Above the porch ceiling sits a bedroom bay wondow. So in effect, the floor of the bedroom is the porch roof/ceiling. The porch ceiling has 1 spotlight in it. I have noticed however that the bedroom is always very cold and am trying to...

    Chimney removal

Had a roofer come over to work out a quote for me, he said I also need some pointing done on the chimney stack. I think some of the mortar between the bricks has eroded. How important is it to have this done?

Removal of Downstairs Chimmney Breast - Advice Please

Don't allow gallows???? Well that just whacks up the cost to a lot more straight away then! Forgot to mention, if your house has been built using lime mortar, you will need to use steels instead of gallows brackets as well.... and yes the local council will have to be informed - with my...

Removing Part Of Beam In Loft

By the looks of it mate, that joist although isn't holding anything up, it's tying your joists together giving them the strength that they need to hold up your roof. I'd leave them as they are.

Removal of Downstairs Chimmney Breast - Advice Please

To be honest, it'd be easier if you removed the chimneys from both the upstairs and downstairs back rooms. The chimney stack can then be removed from within the loft space and supported by a standard set of gallows brackets and metal plate. These will cost you around £120. the brackets will need...

    Building over drains

Your architect should have made plans for this already - he/she should have moved the drains and covers and advised on where to situate them. The old drains can then be sealed and built around. I'd have a word with your architect and then show the plans to your builder for a quote. Most...

    Chimney removal

Hi, I've removed 2 chimneys from my house. My questions is the following - In the loft the remainder of the chimney stack remains supported by a set of gallows brackets and metal sheet. The chimneys as far as I know are open at the top - should I have these covered with cowls or does it...
