lining paper or filler and paint

Personally I'd fill/sand as required then put a mist coat on (40% water/non-vinyl emulsion). If it looks OK carry on with 2 coats emulsion otherwise lining paper. You've not wasted the mist coat as this will seal the bare plaster and new filler. One of the main reason for hanging lining paper...

    Colours--------any tips

If you're contemplating doing two colours on the same wall, bear in mind that you will have a fairly tricky job cutting in horizontally unless there is a dado rail or you're planning on putting a border up. Have you thought of giving them an end wall each with something fairly neutral in...

Dulux Plaster Sealer and Rich Matt on skimmed walls

Never used plaster sealer (I always mist-coat) but I would suggest that you'll want a couple of coats of contract emulsion before you put up the finished colour to ensure the plaster is fully sealed and give it a good, even colour - no point putting the expensive paint where you can't see it...

    Floating ceiling in living room

May be worth checking out ORAC, they do contemporary uplight troughs, electric snakes etc - but they are expensive.

Polystyrene coving - should i contemplate?

Sorry, my mistake, high density polystyrene = polyurethane! (I'm a painter, not a chemist!) Good luck with the coving, I'm probably in a minority but I like the stuff!

    Concrete Skirting

Slightly off-post........ I came across concrete skirtings in an old property, all in pretty good nick and just needed a sand for key and a wash down, but they looked totally out of keeping with the rest of the house. I fitted picture rail (upside down) on top of the skirtings, took the...

patching over vs skimming whole wall

Either way, I've rarely had a problem with fill & sand showing through - put it this way, at least worth trying a couple of test patches, if you're not happy with the result start looking for a plasterer!

    kitchen units and painting

Zinsser BIN's the stuff you need, sticks rock solid to shiny/smooth surfaces, ideal for kitchen units and any previously varnished surfaces. Dries dead quick and can be overpainted within the hour. Not cheap but well worth it. Make sure you have some meths handy for cleaning up, doesn't respond...

Polystyrene coving - should i contemplate?

See you're in Fife, don't know how close to Dundee you are, B&Q do some, but Homebase has a much bigger range.

Polystyrene coving - should i contemplate?

Same as Dude, put up all types of coving. However, I do favour the high density polystyrene stuff, lighter, tougher and much easier to put up. Just a run of solvent-free adhesive on both angles, caulk the edges and a couple of hours ready to paint. I find the paper covered stuff is not so...

patching over vs skimming whole wall

He's a builder, not a decorator! Personally I'd go for the filling option, far cheaper and (despite your builder) provided you feather out the filler and use a fine sandpaper shouldn't be visible when painted.

    Doors stripped

If you're planning on varnishing previously painted doors, particularly if theres a lot of mouldings, it can leave you with paint still in the cracks, filler, old screw holes and stains. OK if you're going for the rustic look, but they will never look like new.

    covering watermarks?

You'll want to thin your undercoat with white spirit so it has a chance to soak in properly. Alternatively try Zinsser, smelly, but dries quick and you can paint over within the hour

    Scaffolding tower

Just finished a big old country house (10 rooms + HSL) with 11' ceilings, just hired 2 x 5' trestles and a scaffold board. This gave me an unobstructed run from one side of rooms to the other. Absolute doddle, ceilings papered a dream, dead cheap to hire and very little hassle moving gear about.

    Paint "washes" off walls

More than likely, if you have very dry walls/new plaster, it will suck all the moisture out of your paint so it doesn't adhere propery. Mist coat is the ideal solution, dilute your first coat of non-vinyl emulsion by 40% then go on with full strength - personally I dilute my subsequent coats by...

    Skimming ceiling

You could consider boarding it over - scrape off high spots, find your joists and tack up 12mm plasterboard then all you have to tape and plaster are your joints. Instant flat surface and should be dry enough to start decorating next day. I do a lot of these, quickest and easiest method of...

Thanks Zampa, handy tip about soft sheen - logical, but you learn something new every day.

    Spray paints?

Honestly, don't bother. Apart from cost, by the time you've (intricately) masked off & cleaned up you're better off with standard paint.

    Painting skirting and door frames

Please avoid emulsion on anything other than walls/ceilings, it will possibly stick with a decent undercoat, but you'll always get big brush/roller marks and, like any of the matts will show up every bit of dirt. As for cleaning off sticky fnger marks etc you may be OK the first couple of...
