A bit of a long shot, have a wee look at the old gasket, can you put it on upside down? Leaving the gasket blocking the oil hole? No oil on the cam = excessive wear, so don't be driving it until sorted.

Cheap set of general sockets off the market with a spark plug socket to suit the plugs you have. Take all 4 plugs out and find the wet one, don't mix the leads up. Take your time being careful not to break the top off. If you have a good local breaker they will have all the stuff you need...
