    Voltage drop

Well, at least it wasnt in series. Nice professional job though. Pic 1. As it was when it came out of ground. Notice cracked resin bottom left and soil around main connector

    Voltage drop

Harry, checked against another meter from a friend. New results..and no surpises. Disconnected cable from main board and connected cores together. In theory, one long loop with a single spur and this is 16 or 20mm cable, hard to measure. Resistance across LN in garage - 0. Resistance across LN...

    Voltage drop

Sadly not. Removed the entire joint...will disect later. But with open cable voltage is as stated. 240v main board, 240v garage, but on the open cable some 40m away 110v L-N, 198v L-E. That this removed joint was a bodge is not in doubt...the plastic case had been broken apart, and the original...

    Voltage drop

Hi Detlef..I am using a bog standard meter, but dont really understand the problem. The same meter measured 237 in the shed when I was checking to see if I could provide sufficient power for my wood splitte a couple of years ago. It has worked fine for the 9 years we have lived here. Nothing has...

    Voltage drop

Definately a bodge job. And resin cracked. Bad news , having removed joint the problem remains..110v L to N, 198v L to E on open wires. So..supply at house 240, supply at garage 240, supply at end of long cable connected to garage..110v. I suspect the T to the garage will be the same bodge...

In fact the more I think about it, the more it makes sense. Thanks Bernard..good bit of lateral thinking!

    Voltage drop

Either way, It is time to remove and do properly I think - I dont need the spur the the pumphouse, it is not a useable space.

    Voltage drop

That is entirely possible - But it all worked fine a couple of months ago. There is no load on the old pumphouse..the pumps were removed, and the cable terminates at the old isolator. And what can explain a drop from 237 to 125? I can only assume a massive impedance on the supply? Although if...

    Voltage drop

No, side cable is what supplies my shed. Main cable feeds old pump house. So 125v measured on both pump house and shed, 240v on garage where feed comes from. I am guessing corroded contacts inside the resin...but cannot prove without breaking cable out.

    Voltage drop

Before I cut this out..would you assume it is the problem? Now way of testing supply side without removing joint!

    Voltage drop

Plastic cover smashed off, and wrapped up in a pair of waterproof trousers! Resin appears to have cracked bottom RH side, and the small earth cable is completely clear of the resin bottom left hand side.

    Voltage drop

Update. Could not make head nor tail of the problem. Chased back to underground joint. Resin filled strsight through...which looks like it had been diy adjusted to permit a three way!

    Voltage drop

John, had probes on supply side..hence my confusion. To be sure I disconnectedthe supply entirely and re measured on open cables...same result (125v) Simply cannot see how thatvwould happen...for a near 110v drop I would expect significant current leakage..but none is apparent. And I was running...

    Voltage drop

That will be a long wait! Supply is isolated. Cannot figure out what would cause fully armoured cable to fail...hence my assumption on a junction box somewhere.

    Voltage drop

Thanks john..that would be my intent but will probably hire a cable detector to work out where everything is first. One question...small distribution unit, supply two sockets and a light on two breakers. With a meter across live and neutral at the main switch, meter reads 220v with the main...

    Voltage drop

I have a pumphouse about 80m from the house with a 10mm supply cable although no longer used. Nearby is a shed which I believe shares the supply. However, suddenly getting massive no load voltage drop from 238 to 220 in the shed next to it, and with only a tiny load drop to 198. Bizarely, when I...
