If your sure you have turned off the fill loop taps then remove the flexi hose, you wont get wet if turned off. the pressure should drop as you remove water from the system as long as you have not shut off the flow and return isolateing valves.

Your pump must be working ok or it would overheat big time on hot water. check both your iso valves to the htg are open and clear, the diverter valve should rest in the ch position (plunger in ), the 240 is at least 7 years old why was it took out ?

If you get water out of the air inlet point of the expansion vess then its duff and has to be replaced. if its the 35cdi MK1 then its very easy to change (boiler has two pumps) if its the 35cdi MK2 (1 pump ) then its a Corgi job as the gas valve has to come out and its a bit of a pig to get out.

If your pressure does not fall but stays at 3 bar plus then its your plate heat exchanger that passing primary to second , if the pressure does fall to well below 1 then back to 3 when the central htg is on then its prob your expansion vess as said above.
