    there's no problem leaving it plugged it, if there is no power to the unit. when i'm in the repair shop, and i have 5 machines on the table, its easier to have the power cables removed during work inside. It just gives me 100% piece of mind.

    thinking about it, if it was over heating, you could get one of those cooling tray things. Also go to a local pc repair store, they usually (we always did) have a few spare cpu's from dead laptops that may be compatible.

    Your broadband speed is probably around 10mbps or less. Wifi is 54mbps or faster. The limiting factor there is your broadband connection speed, not your wifi speed. Generally PCI wireless is superior to USB. However, it does depend on the make and model of each.

    turn the laptop over and look for a panel which is over the disk drive, open it, you should be able to access the disk drive from there, if you can, remove the drive, if you can't then take a photo of it open for me and post it here i'll talk you through it step-by-step.
