    earthing the armour on SWA

Under what circumstances would it be appropriate to NOT earth the armour on SWA cable? a close relative of mine went to his local electrical factor's (in Scotland) with a shopping list i gave him for some SWA and brass gland kits for running power to an outdoor appliance. The helpful chap...

    shielded/earthed Cat 5 8P8C "RJ45" pattress box

thanks v much for all help; every day is a school day. when I went into the loft all tooled up with my metal RJ45 gear the first thing I came across was an inline coupler for the TV coax.... uncoupled. that sorted out the TV SNR issue; nothing to do with the Ethernet modifications.

    shielded/earthed Cat 5 8P8C "RJ45" pattress box

whats the deal with cat5e & cat6? will cat5e plugs go into a cat6 socket? or is there some keying to make it impossible? what does "keystone" mean? cheers

    shielded/earthed Cat 5 8P8C "RJ45" pattress box

thanks for all input. the radio is for sure only 100 mbit the lappie is bran new though so I suppose it could be putting signal on all wires. yes, as you say the SNR on the freeview only falls off when we connect the lappie, not the radio. the lappie I have since discovered is not earthed...

clover leaf computer leads insulation fault.

I import a lot of Chinese stuff direct and a couple of times Ive had a PAT tester come back to me saying the cable is faulty. Once we had a fire on a workboat caused by an overheated cloverleaf cable. luckily no disaster, just a nasty smell! I suspect that the PVC might be "filled" with...

    shielded/earthed Cat 5 8P8C "RJ45" pattress box

Please could anyone recomend a good, screened (and preferably earthable) surface mounting solution for terminating foil-screened Cat5 cable with an 8P8C socket? ideally the back-box and faceplate will be screened with an earth terminal. Ive just installed a laptop, about 80m of FTP cat5, a...

    switch for a shower area

the air switch idea is quite nice... ! I should have explained further: a separate switch, if we have to go down that route, would have to be installed on the ceiling near to the luminaire, so that does rather imply using a pull cord. the rest of the room is finished, so whilst the air...

    switch for a shower area

Could anyone reccomend an appropriate 6A 240VAC SPST lightswitch that is safe & legal to use whilst inside a shower? a slight cockup has been made, the remedy for which is either part of a ceiling to be replaced or a lightswitch to be dropped near the unenclosed shower in a wetroom style...

    terminal joining kits?

just found "click flow" connector blocks. they look like a good solution for my smoke heads and for many other things too.... are they? or is this a gimmick to be avoided?

    terminal joining kits?

Ive got a bunch of firex maintained smoke heads, they come with little whip harnesses which plug into the back of the head, and leave the installer with flying leads to connect into the backbone fourcore&earth. is there some sort of nifty modern "connection system" for this, rather than using...

why does the supply drop to 50V

ok, interesting.thanks. could you explan a bit further how that actually causes the lower volts appearing on the line conductors in the house? I thought the networks are now so full of sensors etc that any abnormality causes complete disconnects... we have 2 overhead wires (11kV single...

why does the supply drop to 50V

we get a lot of powercuts in winter due to poor weather mainly. (not exactly sure what the mechanism there is) usually the power just goes completely off. but occasionally, and only this last couple of years, the power dips down to 50VAC. I only noticed this because the remaining filament...

    DHW controller

yes when I actually engaged brain I realised that's how it should be set up, so my Horstmann e-7 is just a controller for the boost at any time of day and the cheap rate is hardwired, and looks after itself. thanks
