MCB tripping for no apparent reason

Sounds like you need to hire someone with the proper test equipment to check the cables. No earth is a wee bit of a problem. Are you sure there's no link on the timing of the trips - central heating pump kicking in for example?

Which Consumer Unit will best suit my need?

Loom? I recently chose a cu fully stocked with rcbos in the main house because I don't like this idea of a fault taking out half the board. For the garage I'm in the process of having a separate supply run to it split after the meter, rather than run it all off a single way in the house cu...

    suspect rogue trader

Getting your LABC involved may end up being expensive, you may want to consider just trying to satisfy buyers with a PIR instead. Avoid lying, but you don't have to volunteer information. The estate agent will have come across this issue many times so can probably advise on your cheapest least...

    Light switch

I tried halogen lights, the bulbs kept going and taking the fuse out when they did. So there's that to look forward to.

    Square D Consumer Unit

I accept one is a subset of the other, but i'm still not clear on wherein the difference lies? With an rcbo for instance it has as I understand it an mcb and rcd combined. Apologies if i'm being dense here.

Selling my house - no NICEIC

Sounds like you don't have a loft lighting circuit, just a plug-in light with a long lead. That would explain why no mention on your original pir.

Selling my house - no NICEIC

'Can't find it' is a good response. They'll ask for a PIR, you'll suggest they commission it themselves or just provide it, they'll ask for money off to rectify any problems found, you'll tell them another buyer is interested, etc etc. Standard sale. As for the lights in the loft being run...

Selling my house - no NICEIC

There's really no need to panic, a PIR puts you at the same level (or better) of paperwork as most houses in the country and may well satisfy all involved. You could contact your council's building control department for an opinion, but in your place i'd make as little noise about it as...

Selling my house - no NICEIC

Just say you had it was done before you moved in, lost the paperwork, something of that nature. A PIR might satisfy 'them' but it depends who 'they' are. If it's the estate agents and buyers, it probably will. If it's building control it might not. Getting a PIR is a good idea anyway when...

    Square D Consumer Unit

Just out of interest, what's the difference between an RCCB and an RCD?

    electric shock voltage levels

You won't be able to kill your wife that way if you have an rcd fitted. Have you considered the slow poisons?

    GU10 downlight help

I'd pull the whole kit and caboodle out and toddle off with it down to a couple of nearby electrical retailers.

    Ah, yes that makes sense.

    Cable Duct draw cord

I'm curious, what could go wrong with SWA? I'm just laying mine straight in the ground on the direct and detailed instruction of an NICEIC man, how would a not ideal duct be such a problem when you don't need one at all?

Ferrets eh? I wasn't all that far off then.

    New shower keeps tripping RCD

You clearly aren't competent. I'm not having a go here - I'm just genuinely curious - when I ask why you are still trying to convince a bunch of people on an internet forum you are meeting the legal requirements? You clearly don't know what they are. Do you think the internet police will come...

    Fitting a replacement electric shower

Anyone qualified to certify their own work is on a competent persons scheme, there's a few of them, just check it's not a fictional one/has heard of the guy and get a couple of quotes before hiring someone. http://www.competentperson.co.uk/ May well turn out to be a straight swap that your...

    Fitting a replacement electric shower

It sounds like you're proposing to hire a cowboy. Doing so is a risk. Maybe he's competent, maybe he's not. That's why we have competent persons schemes. As far as i'm aware a like for like swap doesn't need to be notified, but he'd still need to issue you with a minor works certificate...

    Cable Duct draw cord

Sorry. If you haven't buried yet you shouldn't have too much difficulty feeding the rope through each individual section of your ducting, in the right order, before pushing them together.

Works of Art or Spare Cable within CUs/DBs?

I had a cu installed yesterday, didn't look like much spare on the incoming cables, but plenty of swirly whirly cable (technical term) on the rcbos. The whole thing would not have looked out of place in the Tate, almost a shame it has a cover on now.
