So... basically, if I see a sealed-up fireplace in a house and it has NO vent in it, then I need to make sure the chimmney ISN'T capped. CAPPED Chimney = MUST have vent in sealed up fireplace Is that correct?

Sorry, just to clarify... Capped chimney = no need for vent in a sealed fireplace UNcapped chimney = DOES need a vent in a sealed fireplace Is that right?

Could someone please post a link to an image that shows what I should look for (to determine whether a chimney is or isn't capped)? A picture is worth a thousand words, as they say... TIA

Nope. But as a lot of people have said, a simple blockage is the first answer that springs to mind when you sink backs up, and that's what I thought too.

Because I assumed it was a simple blockage and couldn't be bothered with dealing with the landlord, plumbers etc.!

Thanks chris. I think the answer must be along these lines. The horizontal pipe isn't exactly as uphill as the photo suggests (just the camera angle) but there does seem to be some kind of trapped air issue. Whne the sink has sitting water in it, and I slightly unscrew one of the joints...

I haven't taken off the t-juntion part specifically but I have poured water down it, into a bucket. I've also poured water through every other part of the pipework in the pic. What seems to be happening is at the very point I reassmeble everything, something is happening that blocks the flow...

There can't be a blockage even further down because I have literally poured water into the pipe and it has flowed away quite happily. That's what I don't understand! I should also add that we are in a 3rd (top) floor flat.

Thanks for the tips but I am certain now that there is no physical blockage. I've dismantled the pipes, used a drain unblocking tool and fed water through all the seperate bits of pipe and water flows fine through them all. I have emptied a 2ltr bottle of water right into the back waste pipe...

Well the damn thing is still blocked this morning. :( I guess it's dismantling time yet again.
