Recommend a place to buy furniture (London)?

Hi all, Not strictly DIY related, but does anyone have any recommended places to buy good quality, reasonably priced furniture BESIDES Ikea?! I'm looking for a showroom type store where you can see/touch the items rather than an online store. A bed, a leather sofa and a dining room set...

Old fireplaces - must have air vent?

So... basically, if I see a sealed-up fireplace in a house and it has NO vent in it, then I need to make sure the chimmney ISN'T capped. CAPPED Chimney = MUST have vent in sealed up fireplace Is that correct?

Old fireplaces - must have air vent?

Sorry, just to clarify... Capped chimney = no need for vent in a sealed fireplace UNcapped chimney = DOES need a vent in a sealed fireplace Is that right?

Old fireplaces - must have air vent?

Could someone please post a link to an image that shows what I should look for (to determine whether a chimney is or isn't capped)? A picture is worth a thousand words, as they say... TIA

Old fireplaces - must have air vent?

Old fireplaces - must have air vent?

Hi all, wonder if someone can answer this question. Been looking at some 1930's houses recently and have noticed that most have sealed up the old fireplaces in the dining rooms etc. However, with some, a small air vent has been left in the wall whereas with others there seems to be no vent. I...

Sink won't drain but there's no blockage?

Just a quick follow-up to this. I eventually gave up and asked the landlord to arrange a plumber. In the end he sent round a handyman who did exactly what I did: Used a plunger (didn't work), then took pipes apart and used unblocking tool (didn't work). He then repeatedly added water to...

Sink won't drain but there's no blockage?

Nope. But as a lot of people have said, a simple blockage is the first answer that springs to mind when you sink backs up, and that's what I thought too.

Sink won't drain but there's no blockage?

Because I assumed it was a simple blockage and couldn't be bothered with dealing with the landlord, plumbers etc.!

Sink won't drain but there's no blockage?

I really do wish it was that simple. OK I'm no expert but there is something not right about this being a blockage. I have poured a 2ltr bottle of water straight down the back, vertical pipe and it has flowed away fine. When all the pipes are assembled and I turn on the tap, it takes about 5...

Sink won't drain but there's no blockage?

Thanks chris. I think the answer must be along these lines. The horizontal pipe isn't exactly as uphill as the photo suggests (just the camera angle) but there does seem to be some kind of trapped air issue. Whne the sink has sitting water in it, and I slightly unscrew one of the joints...

Sink won't drain but there's no blockage?

I haven't taken off the t-juntion part specifically but I have poured water down it, into a bucket. I've also poured water through every other part of the pipework in the pic. What seems to be happening is at the very point I reassmeble everything, something is happening that blocks the flow...

Sink won't drain but there's no blockage?

There can't be a blockage even further down because I have literally poured water into the pipe and it has flowed away quite happily. That's what I don't understand! I should also add that we are in a 3rd (top) floor flat.

Sink won't drain but there's no blockage?

Thanks for the tips but I am certain now that there is no physical blockage. I've dismantled the pipes, used a drain unblocking tool and fed water through all the seperate bits of pipe and water flows fine through them all. I have emptied a 2ltr bottle of water right into the back waste pipe...

Sink won't drain but there's no blockage?

Well the damn thing is still blocked this morning. :( I guess it's dismantling time yet again.

Sink won't drain but there's no blockage?

When I put it back together and turned on the tap, the amount of water the went down the plug hole was roughly the capacity of the u-bend and pipes, then the sink started filling. No disposal - this is just a standard kitchen sink. i guess this has all the signs of something blocking the pipe...

Sink won't drain but there's no blockage?

OK this is bizarre. Have replaced washer. No leak any more. Good. I've taken the pipes apart: Water flows down the main waste pipe at the back - no major blockage Water flows through the individual bits of pipe - they're dirty but there's no major blockage. Water flows from the plug...

Sink won't drain but there's no blockage?

Plumbing newbie here (if you couldn't tell)... Our sink suddenly stopped draining tonight so I tried the old plunger. No luck. Quite a lot of resistance with water coming back up the overflow etc. No unblocker to hand, so I dismantled the undersink pipes. The weird thing is, there was some...

General question: Combi versus back boilers/immersion

Are combi boilers generally only suitable for flats or smaller houses? I have lived in a number of flats and I like the convenience and efficiency of combi boilers, but looking at houses recently most seem to use a combination of a back boiler and immersion tank (a system I'm unfamiliar with)...

How do I replce the ignition on a built-in gas hob?

After a loud pop and a trippped fuse last night, discovered that the ignition / spark thing on our gas hob is not working. Are these things fairly simple to fix or replace? Early investigation seems to show that the plastic cap on the switch is incredibly well fixed (but not watertight!) and...
