    Unswitched wall sockets

You are asking this on a "technical" forum. Most of the guys here have a good Electrical Theory knowledge. Do you? You must realise that the Hi-Fi industry is full of con men and purveyors of "snake oil". The TINY impedances present in the electrical supply network will not affect any well...

You might find that the boiler has terminals for a room thermostat which have been jumpered.

    Consumer Unit Electric Safety question

Obviously a multimeter can be used but its just not recommended. Apart from safety reasons given above, multimeters are very high impedance and can give a false indication due to this. An "approved" voltage detector won't break the bank. Frank

To use or not to use........

Absolutely no need as all BS sockets have protective shutters. In fact, there is increased risk if the "protectors" are fitted.

Is it OK to use two 3kw fan heaters in conservatory?

I have a 4x4m conservatory with 2x 1.5kW, wall mounted convector heaters. That's plenty warm enough after about 15min. Frank.

Meter tails are usually 25sq.mm so 10mm is too small to be fused 100A You would normally run singles in conduit, not T&E. Frank

How to dim light without using a dimmer

Yes, that's true but... "Well designed" audio gear will be unaffected by a small amount of power line noise. Don't forget, your mains will have other peoples "noise" as well as your own. Frank

    Apple Juice/Cider

I have made some good cider using 1.5l apple juice cartons from Lidl. It ends up aboput 6% ABV with no added sugar. Frank

    Dimmer for 12V Transformer

Generally accepted as being correct however... If you reduce the filament temperature (dimming) the rate of tungsten evaporation is greatly reduced so life is not reduced as expected. When the lamp is used at full temperature, any evaporated tungsten that has condensed on the envelope is...

    Still OK to use XP?

Surely that applies to all (including the current) version of Windows. They all rely heavily on third-party add-ons for basic security. Win XP won't suddenly stop working. Just use it. Frank

where to buy soldering iron n what to look for

This is not as easy and straightforward as you think. If you don't already have a soldering iron, you will not possess the skills to work on a mulit-layer, plated through hole board. There is a serious risk that you will damage the board. Apart from a temperature controlled iron, you will...

    Rough Service Lamps

I would say that they are not suitable for domestic use. Fittings have a maximum figure of heat dissipation based on the rating of "standard" lamps. RS lamps produce significantly more heat so could overheat the fitting. Frank

    Intermittent trips driving me mad

Most likely, its a "delta suppressor" which has failed. These are connected between L, N & E before the appliance switch so sit across the supply even when the device is switched off. A cheap and easy repair and easy to diagnose with an insulation tester.

Masthead amp rip off - anything i can do ?

Unfortunately, he is probably correct. At the same time as analogue switch-off, each transmitter site was re-engineered and the power increased substantially. Its likely that you don't even need a mast-head amp now. One important thing to check it that its power supply is switched on and...
