    My Complete DIY Rewire

    In the eight pages of this thread, that seems an odd point to pick up on, when there's so much more worthy material :mrgreen: There's this, for example; Or perhaps this (I'm assuming he means 1.5mm for sockets?);

    Martindale EZ150 - worth buying?

Thanks guys. Think I'll hold on to my cheapie tester, then, and spend my £42 on something else

    Martindale EZ150 - worth buying?

I have one of the amazon/ebay £5 socket testers and I think I understand its capabilities and limitations. Earlier this week, Eric mentioned this device; http://isswww.co.uk/martindale-ez150-xtra-nontrip-earth-loop-impedance-tester?gclid=CM301sDazsMCFRMatAodPxEAXQ On the surface (no pun...

    shed wiring and electrics

The OP's question was asked and answered halfway down page one, yet we get another two pages of nonsense and pointless argument because winston and b-a-s want to use a DIY forum to boost their ego...

How do the DNO cut live service cables?

I'd quite like to have sufficient knowledge to be an electrician. Do the electricians on here lust after westie's job?

    My Complete DIY Rewire

As an observer, it pains me to say that he doesn't want any help. This thread is now on its sixth page and the OP is repeating his refrain, thus (paraphrase); But he has ignored all of the pointed questions, especially around LABC notification. As has been mentioned previously, he's...

What do you think will be new/changed in the 18th edition?

Massively off topic, but happy 20,000th post, John

Extending cables to move a consumer unit

There's also the question of which cables are being moved; the incoming tails, or the outgoing circuits? (I hope the latter)

    fire expanding foam distribution board

As I read this thread I can see where the OP was originally recommended to call in an electrician, however the later posts (interesting though they are) could be construed as a suggestion that this recommendation is still being debated. For the avoidance of any doubt, are you still...

Is it OK(ish) to treat garage MCBs as switches?

I'm a little confused, then. So MCBs *can* be used as isolating switches, then? Or are we sticking with the original advice?

induction hob and electric oven wiring...help needed

It depends on the power requirements of the induction hob compared to the old oven. Induction hobs typically require a lot of power and if the original circuit was designed for a lower power device then it may not be suitable. Can you find the power requirement for the existing oven (off the...

Is it OK(ish) to treat garage MCBs as switches?

Ah - great point. So an isolating switch in one direction would still leave the circuit live, but with diminished current carrying capacity! Definitely not doing that, then!

    Replace wired smoke alarms

Ah - fair enough. We have interconnected alarms but it never occurred to me that they would all alarm if one detected smoke. In that case, I fall into the camp that would be uncomfortable trusting this to wifi.

    Replace wired smoke alarms

Presumably, though, the units will still shriek an alarm autonomously? (they're not relying on a remote wifi-controlled sounder) :?:

Is it OK(ish) to treat garage MCBs as switches?

I've perhaps given the impression that my vast and luxurious "workshop" allows me to maintain 19th century steam locomotives as well as the odd light aeroplane. In fact, it's a standard single garage so it won't take long just to walk round the eight sockets and flick their switches off. If I...

Is it OK(ish) to treat garage MCBs as switches?

Thanks John (and all). I'll just stop doing it - that seems the most prudent solution!

Is it OK(ish) to treat garage MCBs as switches?

Cool - my very own diynot/electrics debate  Soooo.... we think that on balance it *is* ok to use the MCB as an off-load isolator switch? As John said, this isn't for the lights (I wouldn't want anyone to have to fiddle with a CU / MCBs just to turn the lights on), it's for the...

Is it OK(ish) to treat garage MCBs as switches?

Oops - you think the concern is switching them when there is a load across them, or is it more basic than that? I could just stop doing it, I guess
