I was going to ask why nobody uses the search feature, but..

Most of the time, they don't need to, as there are similar threads on the front page that pretty much address the question they're going to ask. It's bad enough with the recurring "how do I run power to my garage" merry-go-round, but now we have the seasonal "is it ok for me to run 3KW of...

    Surge plug socket protection

£100 for a mains lead and £2,000 for a speaker cable Do they still claim that there is such a thing as "directional cable"? (edit: oh yes, yes, they do...)

Domestic circuit breaker board - welding machine ?

A perfectly pragmatic approach, and I'm sure that's the case with 99% of home-welders.

    Generator Earth

I guess the HSS instruction leaflet said "This product must be earthed!" - hard to see what could go wrong with such clear instructions :D

    Generator Earth

One of the chaps on mig-welding.co.uk posted this, as spotted outside a shop in Leeds; Good to see them taking health and safety seriously! (source)

    Outdoor electrical wiring

I completely agree with all of the advice posted on here - definitely not a good idea, but; While I concur with it being unsafe, and also accept Bernard's point about duty of care and liability, I'm having a hard time seeing this being "illegal" and, by extension (har har) leading to the OP...

Basic electrical question(for you but not for me)

Nope - you'll be fine. Current is drawn by the device, not pushed by the power supply (a simplification, but I'm sure you get the point). So the new power supply is rated at up to 4.3A but the laptop will only draw up to 2.3A (and typically much less).

    Shower switches off

It's not that, then. How about water pressure? Do the taps in the bathroom seem to be giving the same level of pressure that they used to? Some showers have a "low pressure" warning light - does that come on just before it cuts out?

    Shower switches off

Were you using it for longer than usual? Could it have overheated?

RCD tripped when MCB was already off

Ah - roger that - thanks John, and everyone else. Good to hear that I'm the fault, rather than the wiring

Relocating sockets and routing cable in new(ish) house.

Have a look at these; http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-PA411KIT-Powerline-Adapter-Starter/dp/B0084Y9N3O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418487065&sr=8-1&keywords=powerline+av500 Tremendous value and very easy to use - I've used a variety of the tplink powerline adapters for years and have never had...

RCD tripped when MCB was already off

    Thanks for the responses. So is the conclusion that that this is expected behaviour, and there is probably no fault? The reason I ask is that I am unsure whether Eric is suggesting there may be a fault;

Domestic circuit breaker board - welding machine ?

The thread that b-a-s linked to would be, in my opinion, the best place to continue the discussion of DNO permission for welders, rather than trying to resurrect it here. Contrary to that advice, I would contend that 99.9% of home-welder users have not sought permission from their DNO...

    Surge plug socket protection

Must admit that was my thought, too. Seems a bit like snake-oil to me; "Protect your sensitive electronics from horrible, dangerous, malevolent power surges" ... that never happen. If you genuinely do have power surges then a call to your electricity supplier should be the first action.

    Multimeter recommendations

I remember Byte magazine! Re network essentials, yes - absolutely. It went into great detail about what CSMA/CD meant, the concepts behind routers, bridges and switches and how IP (and, by extension, everything that runs on top of it) works. Here's a wee teaser for you; a few years ago, we...

RCD tripped when MCB was already off

Last year I had an electrician run SWA to the garage and put a small CU in the garage. This was part of work we were having in the kitchen so there's a new small CU in the house, in addition to the original CU, which has the garage feed plus the new feeds for the various kitchen kit. As you...

    Multimeter recommendations

Maplin have moved with the times and, I hope, will continue for some years yet. Contrast them with their former U.S. based competitor (in the UK, anyway) RadioShack (known as Tandy when they still had shops in the UK). RadioShack escaped death once again just 24 hours ago, but it's only a...

    Strange wiring discovered - help

Have you tried calling John Lewis? It doesn't sound like them to leave someone like you in the lurch. Plus, I suspect that the answer to your questions on here will end up being "you need to get an electrician".
