    new running machine trips RCD

Agreed and have a test carried on the RCD, if inconclusive. Agreed. The 100mA RCD is fitted for overall fire protection to property etc: and doesn't give personnel protection; hence the 30mA unit for sockets - most important where a portable running machine is concerned.

    Transformer calc

If the transformers were in parallel, unlikely due to the difference in the pu values of impedance, and the feeders are from a common bus after the tfrs: - Fault Level Source = 0.050pu. Fault Level Transformer = 0.050 + (0.15 × 0.30)/0.45 = 0.1pu. Fault Level Feeder 1 = 0.50 + 0.1 + 0.05 =...

    MCB &RCD's

Powerful? What means this? :P RCD required, see regs 471-08 and 471-16. Not required to the regulations, although some suppliers require it, installer's option whether to install or not. (CYA by suppliers). Jaymack

    Strange RCD tripping problem.

A loose connection downstream of an RCD, may cause it to operate due to transient voltages or capacitive effects. Jaymack

    Light circuit tripping RCD

What are your supply characteristics? is it a TT system with an RCD; say time delayed, 100mA rating as the mainswitch on the DB; and a further RCD, say 30mA rating for sockets etc? Alternatively if you can't answer this, can you post a picture of your supply meter intake position?. Normally an...

    ceiling rose with hook

Are you fitting this to the wall? I think what you need is a junction box with terminals fitted inside: - http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/sea/searchresults.jsp;jsessionid=KS5HYTCQXSSTICSTHZPCFEY?_dyncharset=UTF-8&howMany=15&searchText=chocbox&x=15&y=13 This can be pushed up...

    Extractor fan vents banging

There are already fans on the market with solenoid operated grilles, these only open when the fan is energised. You probably know that. Jaymack

    Extractor fan vents banging

This would increase the air resistance of the fan; and reduce the efficiency: - less air flow! Jaymack

    Extractor fan vents banging

You could try an external fan cowl type, these also have either self-closing slats or a flap; and come in white or brown. B&Q and Homebase etc. sell these. Jaymack

    cooker hood

I wouldn't recommend using a fan as a substitute for a cooker hood. there will be a build up of grease etc., on the motor and blades. This has been the cause of at least two fires, in my experience. Jaymack

    MAX DEMAND LOAD

The method of calculation of diversity as found in the OSG is very conservative. In reality the maximum demand is far lower than this. If you really want to know, put a recording clamp meter on the tails. I would guess that most installations peak at around 30-40 amps. The only exception...

    kitchen extractor

    Qualifications to perform PIRs

Anyone can do a PIR, even joe public; but a problem probably arises when the report is passed to an insurer, they may require the person carrying out the test, to be registered with a body such as NAPIT etc. The NICEIC only allow approved contractors to do these reports, not simply the...

Help from a sparky please Tripping of RCD

Is your shower neutral connected to the rcd section of the bar? If not i.e. it is connected to the non-RCD neutral bar and the phase is connected to the RCD side, this will cause the RCD to trip on switch on. Jaymack

    Hoods on downlights

Don't use fire hoods. They are near impossible to fit properly and can become dislodged. Use fire and acoustic rated downlights - these are enclosed in a vented canister and fitted with intumescent material that will activate in the event of fire, much like fire door seals. If a penetration...
