Hi Is there any way in which to upgrade the glass in traditional single glazed units to improve the heat loss. Can double glazing units be substituted into the frame?

    Foundation depth

Hi There is a guide line for types of soils and I'm sure its in the NHBC book and it depends on how far you can drive a 50x50 piece of wood. A cherry tree is fairly low risk and according to my charts if you assume the soil is high shrink then you need to go 1.8m

    old timber beams

Hello Just wondering what is the standard way of strengthening timber beams. Where extra capacity is required due to extra loading requirements. Maybe using steel plates? I cant get to the bearing plates of the beam so any solution will need to be partial strapping etc Cheers

    Purchase of building land

It all depends on spec of finish £1000 per square metre is a good guide but if you have expensive tastes it will go up conciderably if you do everything on a budget then you can do it for £800. Most trades in the building trade work on about 10-15% profit.

    Purchase of building land

The house on the land would cost approx £1000 per square meter of living space so if the house is 150000 to build you dont want to be paying more than 100000 for the land.

    1.4 deep footings

Hi I've not had a problem with thier analysis all I do normally is take a large unbroken piece from what is dug out. If you get a fairly high bearing cap then for a single storey it should be fine. if you speak to then you can ask exactly what you require eg shrinkability of the clay. Also...

    Footings question

There is obviously a reason that the house was piled as this an expensive option to go down. I'd be careful that you have not just hit a shallow seam of firm clay that is sat on something less substantial.

    Build up a bungalow?

Hi Both these options are possible and both depend on planning etc. Is yours the only bungalow in the street have others been altered in a same way. If you want to build a second storey you will need the foundations inspected. 7m is fairly typical and 45 degree roof pitch would be enough. But...

Just removed render - help on tidying up after please !

Hi Obviously the drilling was to install a chemical dpc so none of those bricks can be touched. the damaged bricks under dpc will need replacing as they are too blown. The black stuff assuming its mould will come off with a powerwasher and the rest of the render may come of with some brick acid...

Would this retaining wall need a foundation?

Norcon, What was the construction of the retaining wall? was it similar to the one described above. I recently did a gravity wall that was 1500mm high and 900mm wide at the base. So you would be looking at somewhere near 600mm wide for a metre high gravity wall.

    Re-pointing stone and brick fireplace

You can take a quite a lot of the mortar out from around the stone but I wouldn't go more than about 30mm back and if they start to become loose just point in sections with a hydraulic lime 3.5 NHL 1:4 with building sand
