Maybe of interest to competent DIYers...

Well done Dippy. I got a letter from the LABC saying that I'm competent. Reading it again I realised that it said incompetent - you sure that is not the same with you?

C J C, Ignore the people on here - they are just trying to advise you to do the job correctly. Apply for and do the courses 2330, 2381 & 2391 (or their new equivalents) - if necessary again. When you have done those you will not have to deal with the people here. Until then, shove off.

How can you tell if a loose electric cable is live?

Steve, How do you know that a fault/short hasn't made both phase and neutral live wrt to earth? There is one very reliable item that I always carry to eliminate this possibility - a neon screwdriver. Don't knock it too much - it does have its uses and it is safer that a DIY enthusiast use...

    Regulations on new work

I suspect this might be a wind up. However, if I have read correctly, you have wired an upgraded shower in 1.5mm? If that is the case then I suggest that you obtain some jacket spuds ready to throw on the house when it goes up in flames.

    new shower mcb

You should not contemplate changing the MCB for a higher rating unless the cable size is adequate (which is why I was asking the OP earlier)

    Neon screwdriver earth?

"Hypothetical situation - an average punter opens a plastic lamp bayonet fitting - they want to check to see if it is live. The average householder will not have a contactless, approved voltage indicator but may well have a multimeter or neon. The occupier thinks that he has isolated the supply...

A newbies guide to electricity and stuff?

No reply Master Abacus? Term 'Line' is common parlance. I didn't use the term live as both phase/line and neutral conductors are considered to be live conductors (BS 7671). The first suggestion was real and with good intentions; the second was on account of his/her apparent ability and well...

A newbies guide to electricity and stuff?

Given your previous posts and without meaning to insult you might be best starting by buying a 6V battery, some bell wire and 6V MES bulb and lampholder. Connect these to make the lamp work. For the purposes of this (simplified) illustration you can consider the positive connection between...
