    System design

Your design looks remarkably similar to mine although I havn't drawn it out so very interested to see your plan. I am not putting in dhw, I can't see this is not nessecary for us, I am using radiators upstairs and ufh down so intend using rads that can accept lower temps so I can run them off...

    Replacing joists

At the weekend I took the plunge and cut out the existing joists. I ended up cutting them all out to the last one adjacent to the end wall and replaced the main joist with 2 175x50 joists. I have fitted just one for now, hung the short ones on with speedy hangers and just placed the...

Getting this wall to a good standard

Give it a go. I have not done much plastering before but have taken a chimney out in the kitchen and I am in the process of bonding the wall and seeing how I get on. I am going to be putting a tall cupboard in front of it so if nothing else the bonding should strengthen the wall. I am...

    Replacing joists

Thanks for the reply. It will actually support 3 x 1m floor + bannister but in my mind this still isn't very much? It used to support 2m x 1m + a very heavy concrete block wall. Are you suggesting 2 bolted 50x175s are better than a single 75x175 joist?

    Replacing joists

As part of my renovation I have decided to replace a couple of joists. The joists in question form a T shape over the hallway/stairs with one side of the T open for the staircase and the other side has short joists (1m) hung on it supporting the landing floor above. The two main joists are...

    1950s house renovation

No need for sympathy, we are doing it for fun. It also means we can have the house we want. Having said that it is a lot of work and sometimes I wish it was just done but where is the fun in that. My last house was brand new and in 10 years all I had to do was the garden and a bathroom, as...

    Thermal Store or Heatbank???

While we're on the subject of systems that clearly do not fall into conventional wisdom what about running radiators upstairs and underfloor heating downstairs. As a novice this seems never to be discussed and I genuinely am interested in opinions. Just to add a bit a controversy lets say I have...

    New soil stack

BC has been round and said I should come away from the house, put a small shallow inspection chamber over the bend towards the drain and then put in an external backdrop next to the manhole. Sounds pretty reasonable and means I still have the option of internal or external soil pipe. All...

    total house renovation

Keep it up Jen. Sounds so familiar. I was put back a few months with digging up the ground floor and putting in underfloor heating. I'm sure it will be worth it in the end but still not got the new boiler or tank in. I have removed 60kg of old copper pipes @£3.50 though. My advice would would...

    1950s house renovation

BC has been today, feeling much more confident now. Does anyone else feel the stress of the unknown of Building Control? I have had sleepless nights after reading horror stories of people having to jump through hoops to satisfy them. Being inexperienced has made this worse. He approved my new...

Underfloor, condensing, thermal store and weather comp

A boiler will be fully condensing when the flow temperature is below 55C. It will be partially condensing with the return below 55C. If underfloor heating is connected directly with properly set weather compensation, the operating temperature will always be low enough for full condensation to...

Underfloor, condensing, thermal store and weather comp

I'm not in the cc so this may be my fault from a response In another public thread. Can't speak for mm motives but I'm happy to learn about different ways of powering ufh. I am renovating my house and genuinely interested in finding the different ways of doing everything. I have already made...

Underfloor, condensing, thermal store and weather comp

Unfortunately too late for me but I do like this logic. Why do you say the boiler will not be fully condensing whilst serving central heating? What conditions does a boiler fully condense or not. I guess we are now talking about a none modulating boiler?

New Central Heating / Hot Water system

It is a designed system specific to work with ufh. It would be crazy to just connect any old system together and expect it to work efficiently. My understanding of it is the store gets upto a high temp, making efficient use of the condensing boiler, the thermal store then doesn't call for...

New Central Heating / Hot Water system

I am putting in a vented thermal store rather than unvented cylinder; I can't believe pv's would be allowed if they exploded but I have underfloor heating so the low temps required make using a thermal store more efficient (Thats the theory anyway). My second coice would have been a unvented...
