Fuse in Red Fuse Link Holder

Incoming cable, large power cut-out, multi fuseboard (basically large numbers of 100A fuses, one for each flat)n then either: - sub-main to each flat, cut-out unfused, meter or meter switch-fuse and private cable to flats. Something like these as the incomer...

    RCCB tripping

So who thinks that only the live is disconnected on the upstairs circuit? Who also thinks there could be a L - E fault on that circuit that is causing the RCD to trip?

Garage electric funny old cable - help please

But! I'd be asking the builder why the cable had been left in that state, who cut it and the level of training for not leaving it in a safe state.

Fuse in Red Fuse Link Holder

Generally the supply should/will be fused as close to the entry to the building as possibe, so the landlord may not be correct. Very much a choice for the DNO depending on the make and design of the cut-out they use regarding the colour and use of the fuse carrier.

Fuse in Red Fuse Link Holder

What you seem to be referring to is a system where the DNO will have a central supply position where the fuses will be situated with sub-services to each flat with a cut-out in the flat fitted with a link. It was done this way to provide local isolation for, say, changing the meter!! So I...

    Possible danger with solar power

Approved solar systems cannot generate AC voltage without a parallel with the AC mains. They will however continue to produce DC power on their outputs

    Transformer Size

Not forgetting the up to 7 times starting current if the motor is DOL. That might just put a hole in the transformer secondary volts

UK Power Networks and the removal of a meter

It's not a fire risk. Having two supplies in a building is a risk to the firefighters if there is a fire. I supect the cost of the alteration will be higher than suggested once it becomes clear that excavation will be required on the public footpath

UK Power Networks and the removal of a meter

Be cheaper to remove the supply than move! Talk to your DNO Industry definitions for what they are worth. Disconnect supply means to pull the cut-out fuse and take the meter away. Remove supply means the above plus cut the incoming cable clear of the property boundary

UK Power Networks and the removal of a meter

No, and some safety issues as I've commented on

No provision of a new CU and no new circuit - Minor Work?

We had something similar in the early days where some Building Inspectors (non electrically trained) decided that removing a CU that had been fitted to a DNO meter board and then refitting it when we changed the meter board was notifiable. (Plus the issue of the customer being left off supply if...

Upgrade power supply with substation on site

Assuming there is sufficient capacity available from the substation. You will probably require a new supply cable and termination. With that increase of load your metering will go from (probably) the existing type where the whole current is read by the meters to what is known as CT (current...

    One for westie?

Different! Is the cable going/coming (?) from the upside down cut-out the same as one of those in the cut-out below the meters? (p.s. been on hols so late replies everywhere)

UK Power Networks and the removal of a meter

Yes it could be left with the meter removed and the main fuse also. However in the matter of fire safety it is not accepted to have 2 supplies into the same building where all areas are accessible as that is seen as a risk. But there is no "number of supplies" police nor will the supplier be...

    Live neutral reverse

Given that one of the faults they can't detect is a neutral earth cross, is this another source of incorrect indication?

    Garage RCBO tripping large machinery

Don't forget that as far as the DNOs are concerned the ELI at the cut-out for a TNCS system can be as high as 0.8. These figures were set many years ago by the DNOs

    Meter cupboard screwed up.

And of course if a problem occurs with, say, an overheating connection. The whole lot could catch fire as there is no means of quickly reducing load by switching CUs or main switches to off

how close CU to Gas meter

You talk about the CU, where are the cut-out and meter?

    What type of supply

Old cable pre 1970's with a plastic 60A cut-out so it has possibly been changed at some point

Single phase, 2 phase, 3 phase etc

Yes that does happen I will grant you (forgot about these) but again they are not common. But answer this, should a core that may become live if a fault occurs be treated as live 100% of the time. Or would it be better to warn users that in some conditions it may become live?
