Outside cable run - conduit or reinforced cable?

Yes a wall mounted box with an RJ-45 socket at each end will be fine. To connect a double socket and have another independent outlet you will need to run another cable. One socket, one cable. Always run in additional cables if you think you might need more, it only takes a little extra...

Casting a constructional hearth - DPM or not.

Hi folks, Just a quick question about casting a constructional hearth on front of the existing cast shown in the picture. On top of a compacted base should i put down a DPM below and up the back of the new cast to isolate it. The existing cast will be damp as it is in contact with...

    Sandstone Cottage - Woodburner Install

Nope, it's a plastic sheet previous builders have put down in an attempt to control moisture levels however this has restricted airflow in certain areas. Has arguably caused more issues than it has solved! We don't have to worry about Radon in this area.

    Sandstone Cottage - Woodburner Install

Update time, lots more discussion and research done. Had the installer i spoke to last week out for a visit and he can see no issues at all, very straight forward. He advised against using heat proof board in the chamber as it will end up dis-colouring and recommended going for the stove...

Outside cable run - conduit or reinforced cable?

I'd use a good quality branded external grade cat5 - just Google for suppliers, plenty of choice. We use it on wireless links, there are often long external runs involved getting lashed by the rain and baked by the sun on rooftops. It had a very tough outer jacket which is far more UV...

    Sandstone Cottage - Woodburner Install

Hi Possel, Had a look at your blog, quite a project there! It's always good seeing what others have done to get ideas. I spoke to another installer yesterday who was an absolute wealth of knowledge and is quite happy to get as involved as i want. Answered all of my questions, so the...

    Sandstone Cottage - Woodburner Install

Thanks folks, that's really useful info - will do some more reading. The room has plenty of ventillation and i'll be under 5kw output. Horrible laminate floor will be coming up also in due course. Will be installing in a CO monitor too just to be safe, even long term exposure to low levels...

    Sandstone Cottage - Woodburner Install

Hi folks, I have a single storey sandstone cottage, around 100 years old and am looking to fit a woodburner. Decided to open up the wall on the weekend, to see what i've got. The original opening is large 1m wide by 1m tall and i suspect it had a range of some sort originally. Later on it...

CCTV for home. Basic or pay a bit more? Help me out...

What cameras did you get (list part codes)? A Samsung SCO-2080RN/P only needs about 600ma at 12v DC or 300ma at 24v AC. So a PSU with four 1A 12V DC outputs would do the job fine. Get one with more outputs if you think you might expand. Presumably you don't have a huge cable run between...

CCTV for home. Basic or pay a bit more? Help me out...

Please post some pics when you have it all running! I was looking at IP cameras too but decided I was over-complicating it and installing technology for the sake of it. One of our sites has Sanyo HD cameras and the quality is just outstanding. Got me interested until I saw the pricetag. In...

bt dropwire is this a special cable

Where is the wire broken? Can you take a few pictures or explain how it is routed on the building? BT will charge you "Time Related Charges" to fix this, i don't know the current rates but it's around £120 for the call-out then £70 an hour thereafter. The BT engineer might just joint it...

    Stone Cottage - Refurb

Yeah i've got central heating too, the existing plasterboard and timbers do not seem to have any damp issues at the moment, and it's been there for a fair while. Like you say perhaps thats because the heat being let through is keeping the walls dry. Don't appear to be any mould issues, but i...

    FYI Erbauer Router

It's not rubbish, it did what i wanted it to do just fine. At half the price of a big name one they have to cut corners somewhere. It wouldn't last if you were using it every day, and spares would be a problem. If i'd had the time to wait for one to come up, i would have probably held out...

    FYI Erbauer Router

Thought i'd add my experience to this. The Erbauer 210C is the same as the Clarke Contractor CR2 (available from Machine Mart). Only difference is the Clarke is yellow. I bought the Clarke one for doing my kitchen worktops as Screwfix had no Erbauer's left. Toyed with the idea of buying a...

    CUTTING KITCHEN WORKTOP

I agree, use a circular saw or hand saw (depending how fit you are feeling) to get it roughly to size then use the router and straightedge to finish to the exact size. I used a 40 tooth blade in the table saw and Trend TR17DX 1/2" cutter for final trimming. Although the table saw made a clean...

    Stone Cottage - Refurb

Hi there, just looking for some advice. I have a small stone built cottage, approx 100 years old. It has been re-furbed (lath & plaster removed) and an extension built (i reckon around 70's), then further improved 10 years ago with double glazing & improving the single brick extension to...
