    Door opening. Size required for 1981mm x 838mm x 44mm door?

Ha. Cheers for the reply. I hadn't really thought it would work that way. I assumed there'd be a standard opening for each common door measurement. Is it the same with windows? Buy windows, then build blockwork to fit?

    Door opening. Size required for 1981mm x 838mm x 44mm door?

If I'm going to leave an opening in my glockwork garage for a door frame for an 838mm door, what size opening would people normally leave...

Garage foundation. Rebar/tie slab to retaining wall?

I’m building a base for a blockwork garage. 6m by 5m. The blockwork retaining wall for a slab will be of 9 inch hollow blocks, in a 750mm by 450mm trench (on a poured concrete footing). The footing will contain some sensible amount of rebar, with rebar running up through the hollow block...

    Diy hot tub

I think... Go for it. Hot tubs are supposed to be kept hot, so it'll need to be exceptionally well insulated, all round, and have a insulated cover etc. Either that, or do a drainable one that's basically like a mini swimming pool for use just in summer that you can cover up when not in use.

Garage roof. Membrane, battens, slate or OSB too?

I'm about to do my garage roof. Looking at my house, I can see that it's just a breathable membrane, with battens and then slate. I worry that if I'm swinging a large piece of timber about in my garage (as you do), if I smack a slate from the underside I'm going to break/dislodge it. Is it...

Expansion join in garage base? ~6m by ~5m.

We're going to be pouring a concrete slab for a garage base. Size of the slab within the 9inch blockwork retaining walls will be around 4700mm by 5700mm. Is this the sort of size where I should consider putting in an expansion joint? I've not poured a slab this large before. Cheers, James

Timber framed garage. osb/lining paper covering?

Sorry to bump, but it's been a few days. Any comment on whether I membrane and OSB underneath the slate on the roof?

Timber framed garage. osb/lining paper covering?

OK, that sounds sensible. Thanks. The garage will have a slate roof. Is there one membrane product that will do both underneath the slates on the roof and underneath the shiplap on the walls? Or are they different things? Also, I look in my loft and there's nothing but felt, then...

Timber framed garage. osb/lining paper covering?

What would people suggest is the most sensible way to cover a 6m by 5m timber framed garage? The garage will be studwork, eventually clad with something like shiplap timber. I think my garage at a previous house was studwork, covered with bitumin lining paper, then clad, but looking around...

Garage. Will building control care how I construct it?

Hmm. It's tempting, but they'll be visiting to inspect the extension (which I didn't mention) and it's likely they'll spot the garage :-/

Garage. Will building control care how I construct it?

Bugger. It is. Does that mean I'm going to need proper structural engineer design for it?

Garage. Will building control care how I construct it?

I'm (hopefully) about to get planning permission for a 6m by 5m timber garage. I've just finished renovating the house and they were obviously very interested in all of the structural stuff. Is it the same for the garage? I hadn't thought so as I've seen a lot of real have-a-go garages, but...

Opening up chimney breast for stove

I had something similar. I removed everything under the top soldier-course. Just shovelled everything behind the bricks out. My house is still standing. :)

GU10 bulbs. Oversized locating dimple between pins?

Just over a year ago, I bought these GU10 downlights for our bathroom. http://www.mygreenlighting.co.uk/low_energy_downlights/led_downlights_ip65/1208.html The bulbs seem to be TP24 2886. http://www2.tp24.com/home/index.php/lamps/led/l1-led-3w-lamp-long-neck-2886.html Three of the...

Removing and storing a radiator without it rusting.

Ah. Thanks. Is that what people normally do, or am I worrying over nothing?
