Consumer units, 17th ed & RCDs

It is not really a preference. The DNO will decide if you are getting TN-S, TN-C-S or nothing (i.e. you provide your own earth - TT). As a generalisation; 1. Most new builds will be TN-C-S (where the network allows for it) 2. A lot of TT installations can be changed to TNC-S if requested...

Consumer units, 17th ed & RCDs

Yep; and depending on the the type installation would determine which one you would install. Also would you want a single fault to switch off the entire installation, or would you just want the circuit where the fault has occurred to be switched off?

Consumer units, 17th ed & RCDs

TT is the type of earthing system, it simply means that there are two connections with earth (Latin: Terra); one at the transfomer and one at the origin of the installation. RCDs are usually always required if you have a TT earthing arrangement. Wikipedia has a good article on earthing systems...

Is new cooker connection unit required?

Depends on the cooker. I know some Seimens and Bosch ovens come with a lead with plug on it, the oven has the corresponding socket. So you would need a cooker connection unit to terminate the other end of the lead.

New consumer unit MCB's - what do I need as a basic start?

It depends on the grade of alarm system as defined in BS5839-6 For Grade 'D' which is what you are likely to have in a domestic dwelling (Grade D: A system of one or more mains-powered smoke alarms, each with an integral standby supply) a regularly used lighting circuit is recommended for...

New consumer unit MCB's - what do I need as a basic start?

If you are in England or Wales are you aware that this work is notifiable under part P of the building regs? You need to notify LABC (local authority building control) or get a registered electrician in to do the work. If it is the former then you need to notify LABC before you start any of the...

    Live Wire Detector problem

I have the "professional" version, and found the voltage detector would go off when I knew there no cables in the wall. The only way I can use it is to switch off the power at the main switch and just scan for the copper cables & pipes etc

New consumer unit MCB's - what do I need as a basic start?

No one said they would be fault free but if it goes wrong are you expecting the electrician to fix it for FREE?? For materials I would honour the manufactures 1 year warentee I can't see how that is relevant but the answer is No - I don't want to carry the stock that's what the wholesaler is...

New consumer unit MCB's - what do I need as a basic start?

Contrary to what you might see on the TV you can't just expect an electrician to come and do the final connections and inspect and test for you. If you are in England or Wales then Part P of the building regs will apply and you should read the "approved document for part P". Registered...

If you read 433.1.5 the current carrying capacity for tha cable for ring final circuit must not be less than 20A, so it stands the reason that the terminals should have at least the same rating i.e 20A The tests for compliance (Temp Rise) described in BS1363-2 (Specification for 13 A switched...
