Yes, that reminded me of the time I was younger before I could afford an alarm clock. I would drink at bed time 2 pints of water.This would get me up for 5 o'clock to do the paper round. 1 pint for 6 o'clock. May be this also worked for people 100 years ago.

You could try a mole grip to clamp on the nail to pull it out. Try a screwdriver under the jaws to lever the nail out.
