    rcd on ring main

Easiest way is to replace the standard breaker in your consumer unit with an RCBO which is a combined RCB and MCB - this is if you have a modern style fuseboard! What make fuseboard have you got - have you got any pics?

    Business Practice/Payments/Deposits, Etc.

Pay the deposit by credit card, your then covered by the credit card company if they go bankcrupt or dont carry out the job. On big jobs i ask for 25% on the 1st day to cover materials, another 25% 1/2 way through the job and the remaining 50% on completion.

    Outside lights not working

More than likely there will be a connection fault between the 1st & 2nd light, either a loose connection or damaged/broken cable.

    Adding a plug socket.

Sounds good, put a grommet on the new knockout on the metal backbox so you dont damage the new cable when you pull it through.

Both RCD's trip at the same time.

Dont get me wrong, i'm not the sort of person who goes to a job and if its dangerous carries on regardless & just notes the dangerous departures on the EIC. If there are departures that i find which are dangerous which could lead to electrocution, house fire or a protective device inadequate...

    Yellow Pages and van signage

I spent £1200 with yellow pages for a double 1/4 column, got on the 2nd page of the electricians section. I think with yellow pages you need to be near the front of the section, being on the 7th page i wouldnt have thought would be much good. I get alot of work from yellow pages, however...

What should i do ? - Rights of an apprentice

13 months may seem like a long time but believe me it will fly. Worst thing you could do is leave or get sacked from this job and not be able to get another one and not be able to finish your apprenticeship!

Both RCD's trip at the same time.

Sorry just noticed your reply, of course if dont comply but it can be noted in the departures section on the EIC. By installing a new dual RCD CU you arnt making the installation any more dangerous, on the contrary its alot safer than what it was! When carrying out work in various...

Running new sockets from a former shower cable

Put it on a 16amp breaker, thats more than adequate to run standard office equipment whilst also protecting the cable. Will the breaker be protected by an RCD? To comply with the regs your new circuit will have to be RCD protected. In your consumer unit you should be able to see a sign...

Running new sockets from a former shower cable

To be honest mixing cable sizes really isnt good practice, i wouldnt recommend it! Ideally you should run a new 2.5mm cable from the consumer unit to the new room and run your sockets from that. The length & size of cable determines what size breaker you need - whats the approx length of...

Running new sockets from a former shower cable

More than likely the shower will be on 40-50amp breaker, this isnt suitable for 2.5mm cable. You'll need to downgrade the breaker to say 20amps to protect the 2.5mm cable.

Replacing a pull switch with wall switch

Sounds like a wiring error either at the switch or in the junction box. Have you put the red in Common, Black in L1 and the green/yellow in the earth terminal on the switch? Also the junction box has to be fixed and accessible so dont leave it 'laying' around in the loft, fix it to a beam

    New fuseboard required or not?

You dont need to bring the whole board upto 17th eidtion if your just adding a few sockets, you can just swap the MCB for the kitchen sockets for an RCBO which is an MCB with RCD built in aswell (part cost £25-£40 depending on brand). Personally i'd get a new Dual RCD board, should cost...

Swapping single oven for double oven

6.4kw = 6400 / 230 = 27.8 Amps You'll need 6mm cable & a 45amp double pole cooker switch to connect it to & put it on a 32amp breaker. Should go like this consumer unit > cooker switch > cooker or you can do it this way consumer unit > cooker switch > cooker connection unit > cooker A...
