Idiot with screw driver needs help!

OK, Thanks for the help so far. Looking at the diagram it looks like I connected my light into the neutral and the loop block, and I guess that's caused my problem. I will check the connections and make sure they are all tight. I will swap a fuse over in the fuse box and see if I blew...

Idiot with screw driver needs help!

The 2 wires I added were from the ceiling rose into the plastic connection in the light fitting- it was a completely bare rose before. Didn't cut anything except a spare piece of 3 core wire to get my 2 short insulated bits I needed for the 2 connections above. Pretty certain I haven't...

Idiot with screw driver needs help!

Hi, I need some advice before my girlfriend kills me  Our bedroom has no main light, and in a fit of generosity I said I would fit one. I bought an IKEA light, and it had a plastic connector for a live and neutral wire. Since the rose had no fitting, I had to add 2 wires- one in...

    Getting a perfectly flat floor

Just been mooching round some of the DIY online stores, and I saw the laser levels- would you recommend one of these? I would be looking at a bargain basement one rather than some of the very expensive ones available!

    Kitchen-

This doesnt make sense to me. Why not paint the ceiling first? Then the walls, then tile the floor if you are tiling it. Only then would I start thinking about the kitchen units.

    Getting a perfectly flat floor

Hi, & thanks in advance for any advice. I am doing a garage conversion, and want to raise the floor by about 6". I will be doing this by suspending joists in a fairly standard manner. Does anyone have any tips for getting the joists in position so the floor will be perfectly flat, since...

Advice fitting rigid insulation in suspended floor

I assume you have space under the joists? If so you could use "L" shaped brackets screwed into the joists that have the horizontal arm 10mm below the bottom of the joist.

    Ikea kitchens

I replaced the doors on my B&Q (cheap range) kitchen during it's refurb as the carcasses were still perfect. Feel free to slag them off, but the replacement doors were bought in the sale and cost next to nothing. The whole thing including tiles for the floor and worktops was well under £500...

    Size of timber

The ground outside is exactly level to the existing garage floor. The plan is to build a small wall across the garage door opening, then put in patio doors to give plenty of light into the new bedroom (a builder will be doing this). The small wall will bring the bottom of the patio doors...

    Size of timber

Cheers for that. 8*2 are out of the question, since the concrete sub floor is only 6"(ish) below the level of the new floor! I suppose I could then to back to my original idea of sitting the new joists directly on the concrete (which is both level & in good condition), albeit with a DPM...

    Size of timber

Spent a lot of time yesterday looking through previous posts, and it appears to be a bit more complicated than I initially thought. My revised plan is to hang the joists, which should leave a couple of inches underneath that I can run a DPM (although there probably is one already under the...

Building a garage on a slope - How??

I have absolutely no experience of building garages myself, but my garage is on a slope, and that's how it's built.

    Fixing to Celcon blockwork

Is there any glue that would work for this? Seems like an application with a lot of surface area contact, which on the face of it suits adhesives?

    Size of timber

Hi all, and thanks in advance for any help. I am trying to work out the price of converting our garage, but I need to make sure I am using the right materials etc! I have to raise the concrete floor by 155mm to match the rest of the house, and was planning on laying joists and then...

    Builders near Rossendale, lancs?

Hi, Hope this doesn't break forum rules, but this is a job thats a bit big for me, and the forum doesn't have a personal message feature! I want an extension built, and have seen some builders on here that are based in lancs. If you work in the rossendale area and fancy giving me a quote...

    Corgi registration

Completely different aspect on this. I am 100% unqualified and incompetent to work on gas. That means I hire someone to do any gas work for me. Irrespective of the rights or wrongs of the legal position, I would NEVER hire someone to work on the gas in my home, where my family live...

    drained system

Just to try set Craigs curiosity at rest according to united utilities it is pretty common for this to happen, and the person I spoke to said they just turn off the tap at the stopcock and run all the taps etc till nothing comes out. A reverse of this should sort it out with no probs. Cheers...

    drained system

well the house in in Helmshore in lancs, so not too far away if you're really eager  My guess is when the house was repossessed they drained the system to avoid having water standing in the pipes for a long time.

    drained system

Hi everyone- and thanks in advance! I am moving to a new house on monday. The house has been empty for a while, and when we viewed it all the taps etc were wrapped in tissue paper with a sticker on saying (from memory) that the system has been drained and to call in a plumber before using...
