Fluorescent tubes use more power than they should.

I have not heard of ageing fluorescents using more power. Neither have I been able to google up anything about a power increase as they age. Indeed, I can't think of a reason why the components of a "fluorescent unit" should increase power consumption. Current consumption will increase as...

Fluorescent tubes use more power than they should.

When I built my house 5 years ago, I installed 16 1200mm 70W fluorescents. I found the extra for HF ballasts was only 10% or so on the cost of batten plus diffuser, so they're all HF. I think you should look for another wholesaler.

    seprate flatlet electrics

50A to your garage? That's nearly 12kW. What are you using in the garage? I'm trying to estimate the significance of the garage demand.

    Hazards and self protection

It's not necessarily hitting your thumb with a hammer. I had a chip fly off the edge of a hammer into my finger some years ago. Had to go to hospital to have the chip dug out. Still got the scar.

How do I conceal external cabling?

It would have to be sheathed Pyro. Copper will react with damp mortar.

South facing roof free solar pv?

They'll tell you that you get any generated electricity you use for free, but that's a lie. The amount of generated electricity you use isn't metered; it's assessed. All you get for free is the amount they assess you will use.

Need advice on using LED lights

LEDs don't produce any ultraviolent light or infurred — that's one reason why they are so much more efficient than fluorescent.

There are several ways to interpret part P with different outcomes and different degrees of validity. The basis of my interpretation is to find any plausible excuse to avoid the need for notification, in particular exploiting the differences between the Statutory Instrument and Approved...

Fit 2 PV solar panels now, more later?

There are quite a number of people who think that greedy people who take advantage of the government's scheme are despicable because it penalises the poor and disadvantaged. It just amazes me that they advertise their greed from the rooftops.

    230v or 240v

I agree with your guess, JW. As BAS pointed out, 70°C is seriously hot — burning hot indeed. Which calls into question which table to use for voltage drop calculations? I think your guess supports my view that the 20°C table is more appropriate than the 70°C one. If the cable's run at full...

    FIT payment

Erm... I think you got your sums wrong there. If you consume all the energy you generate, you'll still get 43.3 p/kWh so you are really selling for 3.1 p/kWh and buying for 13 p/kWh. Never mind. Your arithmetic incompetence will stand you in good stead as a pv salesman. Getting their...

The reason is that some extra rules are common to both kitchens and special locations. Others only apply to special locations and not to kitchens.

    Upgrading from single-phase to two-phase?

Of course. Obsolete, like Windows Vista and older versions are obsolete. Still used, but not for new.

    Upgrading from single-phase to two-phase?

Two phase supplies of 240-0-240 are obsolete (unless they've been revived in the last 20 years). The original idea was to use light construction single phase HV lines in rural areas. Cheaper than heavier 3 phase HV lines. These had 11kV to 240-0-240V transformers. They were known as split...

What Non-contact Voltage Detector is recommended?

If you turn off the main isolator, then you can't check that your tester will work on touching a live conductor. The check should be: 1) check the tester's working with a live point 2) test the work to check that it's not live 3) check the tester's still working with a live. 4) only now...
