    Part P / BC question

No it won't. If it did, it would lead to many cables being overloaded because the supply to many houses would exceed the nominal voltage for significant periods. If the maximum current a cable can carry is I amps, then the value in the tables would be 0.9I to allow for the voltage of supply...

    Part P / BC question

When you are losing the argument, don't put forward your invalid answers, slag off the opposition instead; readers might be daft enough to ignore the stronger argument.

    Part P / BC question

The half dozen issues that I identified on the first page suggest to me that the author's competence is somewhat questionable. That casts doubt on the rest of his writings. I think it would be better for a beginner to choose a different author than to pick up the misconceptions of this one...

18W 2 foot Florescent tube how long should they last.

Depends on the ballast. If the tube's cathodes are allowed a second or so to heat up before the arc is struck, the tube will have a full life. If the arc is struck with cold cathodes, they will get stripped and life will be short. Some HF ballasts will preheat the cathodes, others will...

    Part P / BC question

"Full of" does not mean "Everything". Anyway, some detail: "on January 1st, 2003 the tolerance levels will be widened to +/- 10%." They were not. "Supply Companies are not intending to reduce their voltages in the near future. This is hardly surprising, because such action would...

    Part P / BC question

I thought I'd just check I'm not yet so outdated that I need to do some revision, so I opened BAS's preferred link. I got no further than the first page. It's rubbish! It's full of b'locks and errors. In particular, there's a gross error that BAS took exception to when a vendor of dubious...

    Combi or Electric

Yes, provided the cylinder is unvented, so that your hot water is at mains pressure. The old system using a cold water cistern feeding a low pressure cylinder is obsolete and will limit your choice of sanitary fittings that use hot water.

    meter change

Npower is indeed responsible for metering; it contracts out its responsibility to a Meter Operator. The customer has a contract with a supplier; the supplier has contracts with the DNO and MO. Customers do not have a contract with either DNO or MO so legally have no connection with them. The...

    Diversity

The above diversity calculations are fine for installations, but should not be used to estimate the demand of whole buildings. If a new building is to be connected to the local public distribution system, the consumer must tell the DNO what maximum demand his connection has to meet...

When I first started looking at these things, 55+ years ago  The colours were body, tip, spot rather than bands. As for tolerance

    Storage heater timing issues - Economy 10 / 7

kWh are not kilowatts per hour, they are kilowatts for an hour. A kW is a unit of power; a kWh a unit of energy, i.e. power provided throughout a period of time. The standard (SI) unit of energy is the Joule. There are 3.6 MJ per kWh. The standard (SI) unit of power is the Watt. A...

    Lighting help

They are spotlights. Any idea how many you'll need? There's no information on light distribution, so no way to assess the number you'll need.

FIND AN ELECTRICIAN SITES: Who do they benefit?

You can judge these sites by how easily a customer can find them. Try Google with "electrician mytown" and see if one of these comes up. If it's not on the first two pages, it's useless.

Multiple doorbells - need a bigger transformer!

I must have thousands of piezos in my kitchen. When one goes off, we play "hunt the appliance". Generally takes 10 minutes to find the complaining appliance.

Wiring for a light/lantern on a brick pillar

"Unusual"? Don't you mean "daft"? If you can't bond, you can't comply with 415.2. No matter which option you choose, you've still got to bond ecps. Of course there's a constraint on being too daft in 415.2.2, but that applies to both options too.

Wiring for a light/lantern on a brick pillar

Studentspark is spot on. No need for the old fogies worries. Well not according to the IET's Wiring Matters artical. Go to the IET site (click here) Find Wiring Matters issue 16, August 2005 and download the article on supplies to detached outbuildings.

Multiple doorbells - need a bigger transformer!

Yes, you could use speaker cable. Make sure it's a quality cable though, such as the following: Click OK, it's only 8 ft long, but you could connect a number in series.
