kitchen units directly on to thermalite

I'd say that timber was perfect for the job :)

kitchen units directly on to thermalite

I think he means a support beam below for them to sit on. That's how I've done it before when strength matters more than cosmetics. Makes the cupboards easier to fit too as you can rest them on the beam while screwing in the upper fittings

    hardboard or ply?

Cheers. That's how I'd planned to do it but had an awful feeling halfway through.

    hardboard or ply?

Quick, and probably silly question: Do I put the grippers and door plates on top of the ply or cut it up to the edge of them? I have some longer ringshank nails that will get plenty of bite into the floorboards below even going through the ply as well, and there's definitely nothing...

    hardboard or ply?

Looks like I need a trip to a builders yard anyway now. I've taken up the last bits of carpet, around my computer desk in the dining room, and it seems someone has replaced the floorboards there with a 4' square piece of weetabix. I think at one point it was 22mm chipboard but after the...

    hardboard or ply?

Yes, anything like that would do I guess. 3, 3.6, 4mm or however they want to size it. I'm following your recommendation from another topic of mine about using a PU underlay (cloud 9 cirrus) which at 9mm ought to cope with any slight difference :)

    hardboard or ply?

Thanks all. Looks like ply is the way to go, and to be honest that's what the carpet guy recommended too. Trouble is finding the bloomin' stuff! Hardboard I can get in a half sheet that will cover the area in one piece for £6. For 3mm ply the only place I can find that stocks it locally is...

    hardboard or ply?

Hi all, We're having new carpets fitted and when the guy came to quote us we had a conversation about our hallway floor. It's part concrete part suspended timber / floorboards due to the house being extended many years back. Where the two types of floor meet there is a step, with the...

    Lagging CH pipes under floor

I tried to get under last night and there's no way! I'm no racing snake but still reasonably slim, however with only an 11" gap and two CH pipes it's just not happening. I'll wait until I've got the dining room carpet up and see if there's any access that way. If not it's out with the...

    Lagging CH pipes under floor

Thanks Tony, that's kind of what I was thinking. There's supposedly only a 5% improvement with the thick stuff but it's several times the price! I have another topic open that I started a while ago about insulating under the floor. Now I know I can get under there I'm planning to do that too...

    Lagging CH pipes under floor

Thanks. No we've never had any problem with the pipes freezing (famous last words..), but I guess they are pumping plenty of heat into the under floor space, and thus the outside world. Maybe it's me that's responsible for global warming?

Cold suspended floors - will a good underlay help?

Thanks for your reply, although things have changed a bit today. We've taken up the old carpets and I found an access panel in the front room floor. I can get a much better look under the floor now and there does appear to be some large gaps in the walls running down the centre of the house...

    Lagging CH pipes under floor

Hi all, New carpets are immanent so I've got the old ones up to do a few jobs. I found an access panel so had a look under the suspended timber ground floor and it seems the CH pipes under there are hardly insulated. They just have a bit of that felt stuff wrapped around them (badly)...

5m x 5m flat roof purlin joist size

A few years ago my flat roof was covered in 12" of snow, which does weigh a lot. I'm no roofer but I'm pretty sure your roof will need to be able to carry much more than the lightweight materials you'll be decking it with.

brake wind back tool excellent buy

Tony - Most cars now use a disc and calliper set up for their rear brakes. Whilst this is good, it causes complexity for the handbrake side of things. As the rear pads wear you would have to pull the handbrake lever up further and further to take up the slack. So rear callipers include a screw...

Cold suspended floors - will a good underlay help?

In my first post: So from the start I've been looking at both options :)

Cold suspended floors - will a good underlay help?

Did a quick picture anyway :) As you can see, if I block the area above the walls with insulation I'm not going to get any air movement around the centre of the underfloor area. Air bricks are in the front and rear walls as pictured. Left wall is party, right wall has concrete-floored...

Cold suspended floors - will a good underlay help?

You make it sound so easy  Maybe I should expand upon the reason why I don't think I can do that. Maybe some of you reading this could come up with a solution I haven't thought of. Basically my 100mm joists are supported by several dwarf walls running the width of the house. I've...

Cold suspended floors - will a good underlay help?

Please don't get me wrong, I really do appreciate your advice and am not knocking it in the slightest (as I mentioned). I know I joke about being tight but after working outside in this God forsaken weather all day I'm sick of returning to a house which is so cold downstairs but almost...
