A Tale of Woe - A Lesson Learnt

    Wiring outbuilding?

I am going to mount a garage RCD device near to where the cable comes in the workshop for lights and sockets. If the single RCD trips, it could leave a workshop without lights whilst rotating machinery spins down. Not a brilliant idea. You could use RCBOs. 1. Am I right to assume that it...

A Tale of Woe - A Lesson Learnt

Rubbish and a dangerous untruth. Electricity makes your muscles contract; they still contract if the current's reversed. The millisecond or so when the current falls to a non-muscle cramping value is not long enough to allow for a let go. Your contracting muscles throw you off the live...

Electrical cable for 9kW electric boiler

Err... In this situation, the voltage is the drop over the 250mm connecting cable; the current that set by the 9kW appliance, say a (nearly) constant 39A. If the resistance increases and the current remains constant then the wattage increases. Ahem... an electrician should know that.

Help in re-wiring a long 350m outdoor run

Someone has already mentioned a "voltage optimiser". These reduce the voltage by connecting the secondary of a 230/12V transformer in series with the supply, bucking the voltage. By crossing the connection to the primary or secondary windings, the transformer would boost the voltage by 12V...

Electrical cable for 9kW electric boiler

Wow! A thermal runaway! That's what happened at Fukushima. You house is at risk of meltdown. The electrician is pulling your p*sser! As others in this thread have pointed out, the 6mm² cable is adequate. The cable rating takes the temperature rise of the cable and its consequent...

    A few randoms

I find it annoying to have to cut the cores to different lengths when fitting a plug. Now I see how to have the same lengths for L and N.

    Square Downlights

That's not a fair comment BAS. They are designed to look good in today's low ceilings, which are too low for good hanging lights. A typical sitting room would need four of the 2 X 12W plc lights to provide the same light in the room as a 100W lamp on the end of a bit of flex. True, it's a bit...

    Questions about replacing CU

Really? I didn't know that. Electricity Act 1989? Or an amendment of it? Or anoher electricity-related Act? Would you kindly be a bit more definite clause no. etc. please? If it is illegal, there are many electricians who must be criminals since pulling the cutout fuse without permission...

    Bathroom light safe?

On the contrary, when BAS loses an argument, he keeps schtum. I can tell you from experience that this is deeply frustrating to the winner. On the other hand, holmslaw is a delightful loser. He continues to dig deeper, covering himself in effluent in the process.

    Neon Indicator in Lighting circuit

Don't spend too much on your energy saving measures. You could use an energy saving lamp say 5W. Leave it on all year 24/7 and it will only use £4 electricity. If most people switch it off and only a few leave it on, it'll only be costing you £1 a year or so.

    Question on choosing fluorescent lights

I am sitting in my 10' X 12' office that has twelve 2' tubes. I don't notice any heat being given off from them, so I don't understand why yours do. Can you feel the heat as if you were in front of a fire? Or is it just that the room heats up?

Recessed Halogen Downlights - Always Blowing & Expensive

Mine too. It looks like it's BAS who's the odd one out. Maybe he's only got a small kitchen — mine's 40ft long. It's not somewhere to sit and read. We do It's not somewhere to sit and use a laptop. We do It's not somewhere to charge mobile phones and MP3 players. We do. It's...
