Funny you should say that, I did try this but as soon as the button comes out the pilot goes out. I re-ignite the pilot and the same thing happens. If i just release the button after igniting, the pilot stays on, but if i pull it out the pilot goes out.

Now come on Kev I am sure I said in my original post that I checked the gas valve and was getting 240V which indicated to me that the gas valve had gone and thats why I was looking for a second opinion.
