    bathroom extractor fan problem

I'm not clear if you got the fan and the transformer as a set or got them separately, if separately you may well have a 240v fan which won't run from a 12v transformer Pj

    bathroom extractor fan problem

You've described two problems - the original fan stopped working for reasons unknown (several possibilities). You've replaced it, so the original problem has gone away and your new problem is that the replacement doesn't work. You say you're getting power through; is it a humidistat fan and the...

    Tripping mini circuit breaker

First thing to check is whether you've got a blown light bulb - these can cause the circuit breaker to trip and, sometimes, continue the fault until the light is switched off or the bulb removed. pj

12v 10W LED Floodlight flickers on, then off....

Double check the wiring inside the wall socket is secure, but it sounds like you've got a dud driver or light fitting Pj

12v 10W LED Floodlight flickers on, then off....

Check the wiring in the socket and check the wiring in the plug - if it's a loose connection it sounds like that's where it is. pj

12v 10W LED Floodlight flickers on, then off....

Did you just get a standard transformer, or did you get an LED driver "transformer"? and have you checked your connections/terminals are all nice and tight? pj

    Advice on reasonable quote please.

Getting three quotes is all very well - but what do you then do with them? Take the most expensive because that's most likely to be best quality? Take the lowest because that saves most money? Go for the middle one to get the best of both worlds? How do you judge whether any of the people who've...

How many sockets should a room have?

If you're even thinking about having more, do it now before the decoration is done. Otherwise you'll look at all that new paintwork and regret you didn't add more sockets. Human nature pj

    Switched FCU noise

You could be hearing a bit of arcing across the wires and terminals of the FCU. Check the terminals are fully tightened down and not loose, which would give rise to the arcing. Alternatively, you hit a gas pipe when you moved it .... pj

    dimmable LED downlights

Rule of thumb - if you're in a flat then your dwelling place should be a self-contained firebox, ie if your flat catches fire it should be contained long enough so it doesn't spread to other flats before it can be put out. So in that case your ceilings should meet fire-resistant standards, and...

    How to change a....light bulb!

... or lampholder. Not uncommon for the wires to the lampholder to frizzle out because of the heat. Wouldn't expect it to happen for three or four years so depends how old the installation is. Transformers should last some years, too. pj

    Electric light socket spring thing???

Because "it's just a...." is the very reason manufacturers don't supply/ship parts, and even if they did stockists wouldn't stock them - they are more trouble than they're worth FINANCIALLY to the supplier/stockist. This doesn't just apply to electrical back boxes but everything out there today...

Change GU10 lamp in spot light

The OP describes pushing/turning "the glass". Is there a glass cover in front of the lamp? And is this in a bathroom? Sounds like it could be an IP65 bathroom-rated fitting, in which case it is probably the bezel - the white plate that fits against the ceiling - which needs to unscrew. Worst...

    SWA for new shed

As you're coming from the consumer unit, presumably with a separate breaker for the new circuit (?), I'd go for 6mm and to hell with it - should be loads of capacity for whatever you want to do in the future. And instead of "a 25m reel" get a measured length from a wholesaler. 6mm won't cost...

Earth Bonding for Gas Plastic Entry Pipe

When the gas men disconnected the earth bond from the gas pipe, did they confirm there is still an earth present? '60s house, could be the gas pipe was being used as the main earth connection and the OP may now be unearthed. pj

    Kitchen LED

As Prentice Boy says, choose your lights first. You might end up with one that has a wall-wart type "transformer" which plugs directly into a socket rather than having an in-line "transformer", in which case you'll need the socket. PJ

    Cooker DP Switch location

Whether it's allowed in the regs has been debated over and over down the years without any hard and fast conclusions that I've seen. Is it done? Yes, often. Can I suggest that if you're going to hide the Big Red Switch in a cupboard you put it near the front, rather than the back, so if...

2 Gang Pattress Box with 2 x 1 Gang Chrome Switches

Very often the decorative switches (in this instance the chrome ones) are slightly larger than the standard and they can be a problem to get side by side on a dual pattress/back box. pj

    Max Wattage - Lighting Circuit

Some years back a friend moved into a new-build which had been the estate show home. Hadn't been there long when she complained that she kept tripping out the lighting MCB. Turned out that because it was the show home the builders had loaded it up with downlighters - as she kept switching on the...

Cutting 150mm hole in lath & plaster ceiling

I've heard it helps to mix up a weak PVA solution and flood the plaster area (from above) where you're going to drill. Once it's set you're less likely to lose the edges of the hole to crumbling. Not tried it myself but told it works. pj
