Minor lighting wires extension - crimping best?

An electrician won't laugh at the job's simplicity. Professionals make things look easy because they do them often and get lots of practice. "Amateurs" do it once in a blue moon so don't have the chance to learn from their mistakes. I was once called to chance a light switch on the grounds that...

    help wiring washine machine switch

Sorry, Cammy, but if irt worked before and it doesn't work now something didn't get replicated. But if you're sure the wires are in the right holes, probably means one or more of them is loose. Have another look. pj

I've always been happy with the JCC fittings, and they'll fit inside your 210 no trouble. pj

    Help with bathroom fan

First off the fan should have been fitted so as to vent to the outside world, not the loft. That said, just venting into the loft wouldn't send the damp back into the bathroom. A fan on its own is never the magic bullet to cure bathroom condensation. Better than any fan is having a window...

    Shower pump keeps tripping

It could be a problem with the pump, or it could be a wiring issue. Does the pump actually get going before it trips, or does it trip before the pump starts to whirr? If the former it's more likely the pump, if the latter more likely something else. pj

ALL sockets on ground floor fuse.

Always treat CU labelling as a rough guide at best - even if they were right to start with things can change without the labels being updated. And the number of CUs you'll see with three marked "sockets" or "lights" with no indication of which sockets or lights.... That's why training classes...

ALL sockets on ground floor fuse.

Not dangerous, but as you've found out potentially inconvenient. Not how a new installation would be done but very common at one time. pj

    which downlighters

No, you can get GU10 LEDs so a straight swap with the ones you've got. Some lamps have the info printed on them but you should find it on the box/packet they come in. You'll fidn them in all the sheds like B&Q and Wickes, or try your local electrical wholesaler if they do retail as well as...

    which downlighters

Use LEDs - they are generally whiter anyway, but if you go for the daylight or cool white levels (look for a K number of 4000 or above) you should get the desired result. pj

    Electric cooker

What do the maker's instructions say? Usually a single oven can plug into a 13A socket, but you need to be sure about oven size (amperage) and what else might be on the circuit you're planning to plug into. pj

Plug in timer, switching on at dusk and off at fixed time?

You can do it this if you go down the home automation route, but that means various extra controls, some form of computer-based central hub, etc, etc. And deep pockets. pj

    Solar Panel installations

His own electric is not free, unfortunately, and if he truly believes that he's been sold a pup. Solar panels generate during daylight. If, during daylight, you generate 3kW and use 2.5kW you have free electricity; if you generate 2.5kW and use 3kW you have to buy in the extra. And in the...

Plug in timer, switching on at dusk and off at fixed time?

One way is to have a timer and photocell in series. Timer switches the circuit on, but the photocell doesn't feed to the light until it gets dark, whenever that may be. The timer then opens the circuit at 11.30 (or whenever). pj

    Downlighter circuit advice

Are you sure the dimmer switch is OK? Replace it with an ordinary on/off switch to double check. Have you got a meter to check that power is getting as far as the spare room lights? If it's not, go to the light fitting on the circuit BEFORE the spare room and check the loop-in-loop-out wires -...

    German wiring

Not the worst that can happen but very annoying - I had one of these a couple of years ago and managed to mistake the earth and live (a hint of yellow and a hint of light brown ...). Every time I switched on the lights the RCD went. Took a while before I discovered what I'd done wrong but took...

    Sloping roof

These days a roof as described will usually have great big blocks of polystyrene insulation (often called by the trade name Kingspan) filling the space between the roof timbers and between the tiles and the plasterboard. This makes fitting downlights a real headache and increases problems with...

    plug sockets aren't working

First up ignore what your mains tester is "telling" you - in this situation you need something more sophisticated. Second, you say you just moved a few sockets around - it must have been more than that. To move them implies you lengthened or shortened cables going to those sockets, and you...
