    French doorsinplace of window

I'm doing the same job now, it's worth asking your planning dept that it's OK to use that opening as a doorway in case there are any restrictions i.e. if that's going to be your fire escape. In my case there was no problem but worth checking. Building regs will be required unless you have a...

    Cutting and bonding a dpc

Hi All, Any secrets in cutting and bonding dpc's to make a lintel tray ? Or is it a case of getting the appropriate bonding material and getting on with it ? Cheers, P.J.

Cutting a doorway in a brick and block cavity wall

Hi All, What should I use to cut this hole in 4" bricks and blocks please ? A 12" angle grinder or can I get away with a 10" ? Or is there some other method I'm missing ? Thanks, P.J.

    cutting down a door

I'm not a pro but I would cut it by any means, leaving about 2 or 3mm over, and then finish it back with a plane. Watch out though, you should really take even amounts off top and bottom to avoid weakening the joints - I think 2cm should be OK to take all off the bottom but you need to check...

    Moving a upvc back door

another good thought, masona - thanks  - it's one to watch out for as it blows a hoolie down that side of the house - I plan a roofed utility area there so should be ok in the long term but I need to watch out for that once fitted. Thanks again, P.J.

    Moving a upvc back door

Masona, Thanks for advice - the lock is fine from both sides. If I switch it round, the door will close onto the outside side of the frame which will guide rainwater into the top of the door itself. I think if I fit a rain bar at the top of the frame to stop water sitting on top of the door...

Wall ties and d.p.c. - please help !

JerryD, Wise words once again. Of course it has to turn up at each end  . And thanks for the advice about the weep hole liners. Think that's my job almost sorted. Many thanks, P.J. :D

    Moving a upvc back door

Thanks for the info, JerryD. By the sill I mean the projecting bottom ledge that hangs over the brickwork (separate item to the door frame) and the rainbar type bits of trim that fit onto the face of the door with silicon. Good point about the glass fit - I'll check that out. I've seen...

Wall ties and d.p.c. - please help !

Thanks alot for the advice. :D The catnic site shows the lintel being used with a dpc. It is fitted into the inner block leaf, at the course above where the lintel sits, and runs over the lintel to the outer leaf and out between the lintel and the brick course that sits on it. Not sure why...

    Moving a upvc back door

Hi All, :D I'm moving my back door from the rear wall of my house to the side wall and I'd like to have it open outwards instead of inwards. If I fit the required sills etc, is there any other reason like fire escape regulations or unavoidable water ingress due to the design of the door/frame...

Wall ties and d.p.c. - please help !

Thanks JerryD for the advice - very helpful. Can you tell me if they should be bonded in place or screwed through the flange into either leaf please ? Also, anyone have any ideas on what I should do with the dpc and the wall ties ? Thanks, P.J.

    nailing schedule

I guess it could be something rude  , or it could be asking for the proposed spacing between nails (?) I would ask them. Be interested to find out. Regards, P.J.

I found some good info at www.catnic.com if anyone else has a similar question. Cheers, P.J.

    plumbing under a screed floor

Be very careful about not letting the pipes come into contact with any wet screed - I read in this forum about a case where the pipes were damaged to the point of being 'tubes of green copper oxide' due to moisture/reaction with the screed. I asked about a similar job and was told to use plastic...

Wall ties and d.p.c. - please help !

Yes, that's the kiddie. It's sheet steel with a top-hat in the middle to carry the polystyrene insulation and give a run-off. Regards, P.J.

Wall ties and d.p.c. - please help !

Hi All, I'm installing a catnic style lintel over a new door opening in the gable end of my house and I'd be grateful for some help: 1. I need to fit a d.p.c. over the lintel. What happens with the dpc at each end of the lintel ? Do I just cut it flush with the end or run it into the...

    underground pipe

I also thought there were differences between the pipes other than the colour for identifying what they carry, i.e. wall thickness.

    Strengthening a tall pier

Hi All, :D I have a block pier, 800mm wide and 8 foot tall. This is supporting a beam which supports the first floor - no wall above. My structural engineer says it's fine, the building control guy agrees, albeit hesitantly and I'd definitely like to strengthen it up. After all, I don't want...

    Brick Spacing (A solution - I think!)

Another pro miffed at the thought of someone needing help to build a wall. I think we've already established that the pros do not need this. Sure there's much more than spacing to get right, but cemesphere has found that spacing can be an issue and that his proposed solution works for him -...

    Brick Spacing (A solution - I think!)

Yes. Considering all the comments made, I still think they're a great idea for the DIYer. I can see how a seasoned brickie would guffaw at the idea, but they're not your target market. Depending on the tolerance of a brick's dimensions, you may need to address the issue of gauge running out of...
