How to protect 6mm MDF edges ... wine rack

I'd like to think that a 18mm square bit of oak is going to be up to it, even with a 6mm groove taken out from it . Like if possible to stick with painted timber ... plastic just doesn't feel right to me ...

How to protect 6mm MDF edges ... wine rack

Thank you! And thanks for the lovely SketchUp work ... Yes ... very good point about an all in one lattice ... those short grained bits would be ridiculously delicate. Hadn't thought of that. So I think I'll buy a 6mm groove bit + bearing for my router and I can hopefully churn these...

How to protect 6mm MDF edges ... wine rack

Hello hello Built a very rough and ready place to store 12 bottles of vino next to the fridge ... made it out of 6mm MDF, simply ripping 5 notches out of the single vertical piece and notching each of the 5 horizontal bits so they all slatted together to make the framework. I would now...

Best way to fill pocket holes ... prior to painting?

You're right ... it wasn't well thought out design-wise ... but in the end I just thought, hey, it's being painted, so it'll never show. Seems that probably won't actually be the case however much filling, plugging & sanding I do. Might try the plugs out of interest (don't know whether there...

Best way to fill pocket holes ... prior to painting?

Ok ... got some of that ... although whenever I've used it in the past, I hate the way it goes off so quickly! In order not to end up wasting it, I find I have to repeatedly make small batches. Plus it's so expensive ...

Best way to fill pocket holes ... prior to painting?

Hi Got quite a few exposed pocket holes on these cabinets I'm knocking up ... what is the forum's experience of filling these prior to painting? Is it overkill to get purpose made plugs? Most of the Google searches I do seem to come up with a product called Durham's Rock Hard water putty...

    Carrying 8'x4' sheets ... solo ...

Ah ... I knew there must be a product out there ... the slight curve is a good idea. But it's nice to knock up your own and have a personalized grip! Turtle option is a little hard when negotiating tight corridors ... also with 25mm MDF on board is quite an ask!

    Carrying 8'x4' sheets ... solo ...

Hey Quick heads up: you prob all know this already, but only just found it out! This is the best little home made tool ever ... thought I'd share ... it basically allows you to carry a big sheet of timber on your own. Found some American on YouTube who was going through all the ways...

    Advice with shelves

This is a good resource ... http://www.woodbin.com/calcs/sagulator.htm ... helps you check if your chosen shelving option will sag or not. The biggest differences come with making the shelves fixed rather than floating ... ie. if the short edges can't come up, it's hard for the long...

    Mitre Saw

Got to say ... I bought one of those and used it for a long time ... but wow, when I bought a proper sliding chop saw, how much easier did life become ... worth every penny, even though they are a bit scary to start with. If you've got plans to do anything more than this one job, I would...

Drilling kitchen carcass holes for shelving

Decided to make a mock up and actually the MDF does seem to hold the pegs in fine. I take it the best finishing sequence is to drill up all the holes first, and then paint. The paint should I guess serve to strengthen the holes even more, and make the pegs sit a little more snug. Going to...

Drilling kitchen carcass holes for shelving

Thanks John ... only if I understand you correctly, that slightly defeats the purpose of the 'adjustable' shelving! I was thinking maybe the sleeved versions of these shelf supports would be better if using MDF as the vertical carcass ... but only trouble is that a column of these is then a...

Drilling kitchen carcass holes for shelving

Nope - they're brand new ... when I say fluffy, that is after 5 or 6 times of putting shelf support in & out. Also think with MDF it might be better to undersize the holes by 1mm or so ... make the fit it a bit more snug

Drilling kitchen carcass holes for shelving

Just about to embark on the same mission ... and so far best tip I've seen is to use a lip & spur drill bit with a hollowed out dowel cut down to the right length to keep your holes the right depth. My issue is a sudden worry that using MDF for the sides where the pegs go into won't work well...
