DIYer wanting to learn - would it be worthwhile?

It sounds like you don't want to be a qualified electrician so going through the City and Guilds route and getting Part P etc will probably not be what you want. Unless you want to know about polyphase systems, inductance, capacitance, oh and loads and loads and loads of health and safety...

Mrs RJB is at it again!!

Spark123. I am flattered you think I'm a spark. Not quite yet! Just the small matter of finishing Level 3 2330, 2381(2), NICEIC or other similar bodies assessment ......(and on and on it goes) I actually thinking ahead and need a couple of installations for NICEIC compancy assesment and this...

    Oven Electrics

The switchl gear should be placed within two meters of the appliance, but not directly above it. Where two cooking appliances are installed in one room one switch can be used but both appliance are not 2m from switch. For further see section 4. Electrician guide to building regulations if you...

Mrs RJB is at it again!!

Mrs RJB wants to run a circuit outdoors so we can have some lights at bottom of garden. (Actually Mrs RJB wants RJB to do this!!! Here we go again I am saying to myself) Fine. I will stall her for a year or so and perhaps keep it for NICEIC assessor minor / major job (not sure which one it...

    Kitchen spotlights

May be the x 6 spot light switch in your two gang switch has broken. Try switching the gangs over and see if spot lights now work or the other light (dining room) that did doesn't anymore. Dimmer have to deal with quite a strain and they do go wrong. (if my elcetric was as bad as my...

    Picture of the week!™

RFLighting and all the other Picture of the week contributors. You should write a book between yourselves and publish it for us C&G boys and girls. There is a real gap in the book market of fault diagnosis and rectification. (I should know I'm alway ploughing through Amazon, Play.com et al...

    Picture of the week!™

RFLighting. (Being serious now) I am actually very interested in this one. I am asking this as a C&G student wanting to better oneself. You were called in on an unrelated issue, but you discover this. As an electrician in this situation what do you do? If you are being employed on an...

    Picture of the week!™

Just got over Hope leaving X Factor so taking a closer look now. What's with the CPC connecting to Phase wire? for starters. Secondly this looks like a relatively new installation being post harmonised wire colours.

    Is everyone a cowboy!!

Its amazing how many homeowners think that electrics are easy and have a go themselves. (This last sentence is quote. Still haven't worked out all these tool bars things ) I think you have probably hit the nail on the head there. I am no pro (not for some time yet!), but so far I have found...

3 core and earth - but don't need the earth..

I wouldn't cut it down because you don't know what will happen for future installations. I would screw end into connection block and tape up in green/yellow insulation tape.

    Is everyone a cowboy!!

John, Are you saying this as I did something wrong or I have no inurance? As a qualified electrican what would you have done in the hall way situation? Would you not work on it until you have done a complete test on light circuit to investigate other faults then fix everything. I showed...

    Is everyone a cowboy!!

This is not really a question, but an exclamation. I am doing 2330 at present and starting 2381(2) early next year with view to becoming electrican etc. Anyway I have started doing simple (not part P) jobs for friends, elderly neighrbours and family. (I am not charging as I feel it's part...

    Beauty Parade!!

As usual brilliant information. Many Thanks Oh by the way I have connected my gas meter to the MET with a temporary cable until I find a tidier solution. (within 600mm of primary meter too  )

    Beauty Parade!!

I've just been practising using my own house for testing as part of learning qualifications and discovered there's no continuity in the Main bonding conductor from the gas installation pipe. (Another case of cobbler's kids have worst shoes etc) Anyway I obviously need to rectify...

    Buzzing Light Fitting

Not all transformers are suitable for dimming. What type of transformer(s)do you have exactly? Dimmers also have a minimum rating. What type of dimmer switch do you have too?

    Fitting an Electric Towel Heater

If the first spur off the ring is protected by a CFU then you can run a radial off this up to just under 3000 watts of loading. If the spur does not have a FCU and just run from the ring final circuit then you are only allowed just 1 double socket from the spur only. From your description...

    Question about main equipotential bonding

Looking at your pictues the installation looks dangerous. I don't think anybody is laughing at them. I can assure you that members who frequently post and answer take electrical safety very seriously. Electricians and competent DIY'ers who help others here do it for nothing part from the...

Adding a socket to an existing spur

Obviously a table lamp will be fine. 3000W is quite a high load in the lounge area. If it was a kitchen then advice would be different. However, I forgot to mention in my last posts that although you may use a light load do take consideration what a future owner of your house COULD use it...
