    Huge wasps nest removal

hello, I've found a huge wasps nest in my attic (about 2 cubic feet ). Do you think it's ok to remove it now in winter? I'm assuming that all the wasps are long dead and unlikely to return. Anyone removed one of this size before and have any tips? Thanks

    Insulating vs. new floorboards

But what about the window frame mouldings? Wouldn't they need to be replaced somehow?

    Insulating vs. new floorboards

The whole bay is brick (Victorian terrace 1890s).

    Insulating vs. new floorboards

Thanks, that doesn't sound like much fun though! Do you mean dry lining it, and then replacing the sills so that they still stand proud? Wouldn't the window frames be lost within the new thicker walls too?

    Insulating vs. new floorboards

Hello, many thanks for all help on this. Just wanted to update: I carried out the work with celotex between joists, all foil taped. Floor went back ok and the result has been a much warmer room! However, I've noticed that our bay window has large amounts of condensation collecting on the...

    Insulating vs. new floorboards

Hello, I'm in the process of this job and currently foil taping the Celotex joins and over the joists. Just wondered - I know the Celotex needs to be butted up tight against the floorboards, but in some places it's sitting 2mm-4mm below the top of the joist. Is this a major problem? I don't...

    Insulating vs. new floorboards

Thanks Richard, Could you just explain the upstanding you mentioned?

    Insulating vs. new floorboards

Many thanks for all your helpful answers. I am going ahead with lifting the floor and fitting celotex. Just wondered, what do I do around radiator pipes, when they go up into the floorboards? Do I just cut and fit the celotex around the pipes? Also, do I just but the celotex up against the...

    Floorboard Paint

Hello, I'm looking for a hard wearing floor paint to cover the hallway and living room floorboards in our Victorian terrace. We previously did it in farrow and ball (at my girlfriends insistence) and didn't use any primer. The result is it's knackered after one year. I hate farrow and ball...

    Insulating vs. new floorboards

Hmmm, I don't relish the idea of pulling up the entire floor! Although it would be good to get insulation in underneath. Also, I haven't had good experience with reclaimed - when I had to replace an area of floorboards, I wanted to get reclaimed to fit in visually with the rest of the floor...

    Insulating vs. new floorboards

I agree in principle that it would be a shame to cover an original floor, but actually the floor is in very poor condition and is painted, as a large area had to be replaced with new pine boards. It is quite abused and dented/cracked/filled etc. I did buy draughtex rubber strip and fitted...

    Insulating vs. new floorboards

Hello, We have exposed floorbards in the downstairs of our Victorian house. The cold and draught coming from below is a major problem in winter. I decided to use celotex to insulate the boards from below, however upon getting under the boards to assess how difficult it would be, I have decided...

    Lining paper

Hello, I want to re-decorate a room: put lining paper up and paint it (I know that the plaster is not in good shape underneath). I have taken down the existing textured wallpaper and it has left the old lining paper pretty much intact, although it has a 'furry' surface quality to it. My...

Sorry, was asking richardrich79 about the batten. Thanks for your advice though, very helpful.

    Attaching skirting

That sounds like a good idea. Did you just use 1X2?

    Attaching skirting

No I can't glue them because some of the walks are a bit curved. Also the plaster is quite crumbly so not a good surface to glue to.

    Attaching skirting

Hello, I'm trying to fit skirting in a room of my victorian house. My problem is that when I try to attach the boards with screws and rawl plugs, they don't stay in. There is about 30mm of plaster, which is very crumbly, before you hit brick. So the rawl plugs just damage the plaster as they...

    Resin wall ties

Hello, We're having a pier of bricks attached to one of the party walls in our victorian house, to support a steel beam. The structural engineer advised we use epoxy resin wall ties, to attach the new blocks to the existing wall, to avoid damaging the party wall by keying in. Does...

    Unblocking fireplaces

Many thanks for your responses. I'm opening it up so I can have a real fire, or put in a log burner at some point. Also, I'd like to reinstate a cast iron fire surround, like the ones that would have been there originally. I'll let you know how it goes and maybe post a picture if I can.
